Glenaroua Fire Station, June 17, 2006
Saturdays 50km handicap was raced on the Mangalore-Tabilk-Avenel course.
Fourteen riders competed.
This flat course favours the handicap riders and the scratch group of Alan Adams,
Ron Burgess and Brett Loney rode a great race but missed the leading group by
40secs.
Nine riders contested the sprint finish. Brett Bender led out, but just failed
to hold out Jeff Hibberd, the master sprint tactician, always difficult to beat
in a group sprint.
Bender is riding in great form and fully deserved his second placing.
Rhys Melville, who rode strongly throughout to assist in holding off the chasing
scratch riders, was close up in third place. Shayne Kirby was fourth, Peter
Jenkins fifth and Ian Baker, sixth.
Brett Loney was fastest rider with a time of 1hr 16min for the 50km.
Ron Burgess finished an unlucky seventh in the Creswick Open last weekend, after
just avoiding a midfield fall in the closing 100m. Carl Simmons was also close
up, finishing in twelfth place.
Next weeks race is the Highlands Goat Race starting in Highlands
Road and racing to Highlands School and return to finish at the racecourse in
Kobyboyn Rd.
The race starts at 9:30am and is sponsored by popular club member, Jeff Madex..
Riders to bring a salad.
