Blue skies again at Sandown this week, and close to two hundred riders arrived
to do battle with 3.2km Sandown Motor Raceway circuit. On a relatively still
night, bunch sprints were the order of the day in all except A Grade, which
saw the big field split into three groups early on.
Causing the split was a six rider break by Anthony Smith (Promains/Richmond
Cyclery), Pat Shaw (Giant), Tommy Nankervis (Fitzroy Cycles), Aiden McInernay
(Team UNO) and Will Tehan (Prime Estate). Midway through the race lead group
was well clear and looked set to share all the prizes, before a chase group
of eleven emerged from the main bunch to chase down the leaders.
Among the chasers were Matt Chessum (Fitzroy), Rob Crowe (HLP), Adrian Salter
(Salter Cycles), 'Sugar' Ray Turner (Bianchi) and Danny Kah, and with a well
coordinated effort the chase group made contact with the early leaders with
a little over ten minutes to race. The new lead group stayed largely intact
until the final lap, when Chessum launched a big move down the left hand barriers.
A series of counter attacks as the leaders hit the final climb saw Turner go
clear approaching the summit, and extend his lead on the short descent and through
the chicanes to enter the home straight with a fifty metre lead. Although the
effort left him totally drained, he had enough in the tank to hold on for a
popular win, with the sprint for second comfortably taken by Salter over the
more fancied Nankervis.
Rick Jones (Burnley Finance) and Paul Groves (Croydon Cycleworks) forced a
gap on the B Grade bunch leading into the final lap, but had little hope holding
off a bunch clearly determined to let the sprinters reign. Impressive junior
Haydn Green (Hampton Cycles) positioned himself well and kicked clear in the
final twenty metres to take the win from Chris Garrard, with the photo needed
to separate Boon Chia, Bruce Will and Simon Vandestadt. Nikki Matthews continued
her good form, leading Apryl Eppinger (VIS) home to win the Women's division.
C Grade winner Dave Watson may well be on his way to B Grade only a few weeks
after earning promotion from D Grade if his good form continues, while second
placed finisher James Mowatt is another rider the handicapper will need to keep
a close eye on. Footscray veteran Ron Gallagher was close to the win again,
with fourth place finisher Rob Monk relieved to be in the prize money after
learning his kids had spent up big in the canteen! Rebecca Hanning was the leading
lady.
One rider definitely moving up is D Grade winner Daniel Andjelic, who will
join C Grade after recording wins in his first two starts on the tough circuit.
Simon Frost was next best ahead of Mitchell Gregory, and Meaghan Godfrey was
too strong in the Women's Division.

of the Commonwealth Games road course on January 29 - including course map,

Carnegie Caulfield's twice weekly Criteriums are on Sunday mornings (except
January 29) and Tuesday evenings. Sundays are at Glenvale Crescent (Melways
map 80B2) with new start times for 2006: B, D and E Grades start at 9am, while
A and C Grade ride at 10am. Tuesday Twilight racing at Sandown runs until the
end of March, with the Sandown Road gate opening at 6pm for a 6.30pm race start
for all grades.
All holders of current Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget
to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out
a day license for $20. 2006 licenses are now available at all CCCC events.
For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth
conducts novice racing clinics within the E Grade race at Glenvale Crescent.
