Vucko Victorious

Alan Vucko rode away from David Hull and Mick Shannon from the limit group to record an impressive victory in his first handicap race on Sunday. Vucko showed an ability to time trial by riding solo for the last lap and a half of the three lap, 27km race.

A smallish field of 22 riders were grouped into 5 bunches with 7 minutes between the scratch and limit bunches. Vucko, Hull and Shannon worked well together during the early stages. One minute behind them Peter Evans, Nicky Joyce, Dave Morris and Peter Vesel were chasing hard with each rider sharing the pace setting duties.

Frank Tortorici, Graham Dinning and Adam Crowther riding as a small 4 minute bunch were determined to catch the much larger 3 minute bunch ahead of them with the intention of then reeling in the front bunches. They looked certain to do so until Crowther punctured leaving the task to Tortorici and Dinning.
Unfortunately the 3 minute bunch then began to pull away from the pair due mainly to the efforts of Joe Perriera , Joe Williams and Drew Robertson.

The scratch bunch needed a big effort to catch all of the front runners. Having a 3 minute time gap to make up to the next group didn't help as it is always much easier to chase when the bunch in front can be seen. The scratch riders Andy Blair, Graham Rutter, Jeff Gray and Mark Scott never gave up chasing. In the final lap they finally caught the 4 minute bunch but could not quite catch the front bunches.

Vucko finished 27 seconds clear of David Hull and Peter Evans in a time of 44 minutes and 46 seconds. Dave Morris and Nicole Joyce finshed fourth and fifth respectively a few seconds adrift. Andy Blair pipped Graham Rutter for fastest time 63 seconds later, in a time of 39 minutes 27 seconds.
