Solo Win for Dale
Despite the looming threat of thunderstorms there was a good turn out of riders for the last road race of the year. It was to be a short dash of just 27km, but with high humidity and increasingly strong winds the going was going to be anything but easy.
In the C grade event strong turns were being done by Glenn Gapps, Peter Kelly and Dave Morris. Despite the high pace there was still a sizeable bunch left for the finishing sprint. Hiding in the shadows for much of the race was NSW triathlon coach Jamie Turner who bolted to victory closely followed Richard Lorenc and Glenn Gapps.
In B grade a large bunch made the start and remained intact for much of the race. Despite a good chance of victory both Emma Lovelock and Peter Cooper fell victim to punctures caused from the poorly maintained roads of what is becoming known as the "Hell of the West". At the finish a fast pace was being set by the local Mafioso team of Joe Pereira and Tony Pulo for their team sprinter Joe Chiaverini. Unfortunately the plan backfired with Drew Roberston taking advantage of the leadout to comfortably take the win followed by Michael Comensoli and Pulo.
While B and C finished in bunch sprints, the A grade event was won in superb solo fashion by Luke Dale. Dale attacked strongly at half distance and set a strong pace to remain just ahead of the chasing bunch for the rest of the race. Despite strong turns by juniors Ryan Hennessy and Aaron Donnelly the bunch couldn’t close the gap. At the finish Joshua Wall, who spent much of the time protecting his friends’ lead, exploded from the bunch to take second with Donnelly picking up third.
