Riverland CC

Barmera Handicap, August 5, 2006

Veteran rider Bob Pankhurst used his track sprinting skills to claim victory in the Riverland Cycling Club's Barmera Handicapped Road Race on Sunday. Riding off 15 minutes, the Winkie rider was part of a seven-man bunch that was able to lift their average speed to hold off any challenge from the strongest four riders. In perfect lakeside conditions, junior Kade Boase set off on limit and looked impressive at the half-way mark, streaking ahead of nearest rival Gordon Lawton.

Visiting rider and Ex-Riverlander Ben Vagnarelli, Peter Weston and Ruth Strout caught Pankhurst, John Eshman and Peter Evans by the halfway point and were capitalising on their bunch-riding skills to set a formidable pace. Craig Ward and Mick Gray were pushing hard and lost only 40 seconds at 20km in an attempt to claim fastest time ahead of scratchmen Lee Stevens and Angus Boase, however Boase put his bike into overdrive at the the three-quarter mark, leaving Stevens behind in the process. With 300m to go, President Pankhurst unleashed his trademark sprint to overpower Vagnarelli and Evans, claiming his first handicapped road racing victory for the Winter season. Kade Boase, who managed to hang on to the main bunch, claimed 6th. Angus Boases' breakaway effort paid off and he successfully claimed fastest time in 1:07:13, with Ward hot on his heels at less than a minute behind.

Congratulations to Josh Steele for claiming fifthin the Mildura Mountain-less Mountain Bike Club's race on Sunday. Congratulations also to Hamish MacKirdy for claiming 4th in the State Time Trial Championships (Open Men) last weekend at a speed of 43km/hr over 40km. Goodluck to Hamish MacKirdy and Craig Ward who are competing in the prestigious 100km Burra Classic Handicap on Saturday.
