Broadford Seymour Cycling Club

Seymour, August 26, 2006

Seymour veteran cyclist Jeff Hibberd continued his recent good form to narrowly win Saturdays 55km road race from a fast finishing Ron Burgess, with Shayne Kirby in third place. The race started outside the Seymour Racecourse and went out Kobyboyn Road and returned on Highlands Road. This circuit was raced over two laps finishing out side the old Telstra depot in Highlands Road. The race began in fine conditions with 20 riders facing the starter and Rob Ekberg and Ian Galagher were the first riders to go.

The next group of riders lead by Wayne Flint began the 5 min chase, with Bret Bender leading the next bunch with a 4 min gap. They were followed by Warren Osborne’s bunch that chased a 3 min gap, with the scratch riders having a 2 min chase to Osborne’s bunch. After 1 lap the scratch group had caught Osborne’s bunch and continued the chase for the next group which was caught halfway out Kobyboyn Road. This left Wayne Flint’s bunch yet to be caught with Ekberg and Gallagher still with a sizeable lead.

At about the halfway point on the return on Highlands Road, Flint’s bunch was reeled in by the chasers. With approx 8km to the finish Ekberg and Gallagher were caught after a great effort to stay away. This left a large group of riders likely to contest the finish in Seymour, But scratch rider Kevin Simmons had other ideas and savagely attached the bunch going up past Telegraph/Lambing Gully Road intersection which spilt the bunch into two leaving 8 riders to race to the finish.

At the 1.5 km mark Rhys Melville attached followed by Duncan Arendse with Glenn Christensen in a close checking move, with 500 meters to the finish Jeff Hibberd flashed down the inside to get 2 lengths on the field but Ron Burgess lead the chasers and just failed to catch Hibberd by the barest of margins to go down by a tyre width on the line.

Racing for Saturday 2nd September is from Tallarook starting near the hotel at 2pm.

For info on the club contact Jeff Hibberd 0407923781 or call into Seymour Cycles and see Glenn Christensen.
