2006 Anzac Day “Flatlands” Cycle Classic, April 25, 2006

The good fields continued for the Annual Anzac Day Cycle Classic yesterday, with the event split into two separate grades to cater for the large field.

The flat course handicap event was introduced in 1995 by then BCC President Terry Dunphy as road sprinters race, and has since been targeted as a goal for many of the club fast track riders, and opportunist riding off all handicap marks.

This year’s 28km handicap looked to be no different with track medallist Drew Carter, Darrell Thorncraft and Road Sprinters Allan Cunyghame and Garry Taunton starting the pre race favourites infront of the highly credentialed Back markers and recent race winner Dennis Martin and Scott Allan.

The prediction proved to be correct when Drew Carter won his 4th Anzac “Flatlands Classic” in the elite class while fastman Darrell Thorncraft took out the Sports category event. However their wins came after some great racing, Carter only catching a large group lead by Katoomba’s Steve Moon in the final 250m of the Elite race.

Sports Class

The Sports Class event was lead much of the way by Marian Renshaw (Bathurst), Gerry Stieda (Lithgow) and Oranges Joel Turner however in the second half of the race they were joined by the 4min bunch, and Thorncrafts 3min group. From this point it was a battle between the leading bunch, the fast finishing 1min group, and the Scratchies.

Scratch markers Greg Bell and Mark Tobin had caught Jill Harris and Clive Lang’s 30sec group, but where having trouble making ground on the larger 1minute bunch lead by Kirsten Howard, Scott Allen, Mick Foran and George Cady.

You could almost throw a blanket over the three bunches at the finish, but the leading 3minute group couldn’t be caught and took the major placing. As expected Thorncraft exploded away in the sprint to win clearly, Canberra’s Ray Gorrell (3min) infront of Jodie Parker (4min) in third. Fourth a tight sprint between Cal Baker and Ian Hill, Baker getting there by the width on a tyre. Back in the field backmarker Greg Bell recorded the fastest time for the 28kms with 42m18sec although Kirsten Howard’s 1-minute group certainly made him work for it recording 42m 32sec

Elite Class

It was the same tense battle in Elite Grade, with the participants forming into 3 main bunches during the event. Early leaders Al Cungyhame’s 4min30sec bunch joined by Steve Moons and Tony Hogan’s groups to form a strong working leading bunch. While Andrew Carter, Bruce Goddard, Glen McGill, Craig McAlister and Dennis Martin 1min group had quickly caught the 2min group and where chasing hard. Behind them the Backmarkers there finding it a tough task with Scratchies Mitch Chapman (Orange) and Owen McPhillamy (Central Coast) set a difficult task to catch the block markers Mal Haigh, Tim Guy of Orange, and Blair Windsor (Bathurst) off 30seconds.

It was a dramatic finish with the leading group looked to have the Anzac Classic won, Steve Moon and Tony Hogan kicked only to have former state track medallist Andrew Carter catch and pass them in the dash to the line from the chasing brunch. Carter beating Moon (Katoomba) and Hogan (Bath), with Marty Guy (Orange) 4th and Ryan O Donell just hanging on for 5th in front of Richard Hobson, Craig McAlister and Dennis Martin.

The battle for fastest time again close, with Blair Windsor taking the honour with 36min39sec, after combining well with Tim Guy and NSW masters champion Mal Haigh, to defeat the scratchmen Chapman and McPhillamy, and also Cater who recorded a very stick 36m 44sec in winning the handicap event.
