Riverland Cycling Club

April 23, 2006

The Riverland Cycling Club held a 50km time/distance handicapped road race along Murtho Road on Sunday. Limit riders Bob Pankhurst and Angelo Ylia were caught by John Eshman and Michael Anderson before the half-way mark, with this group keeping together until the headwind on the return journey sorted out the stronger riders in the group.

The 15-minute bunch of Lara MacKirdy, Mick Grey, Josh and Amanda Steele kept a consistently strong pace before the turn-around point, taking advantage of the tailwind to reach cruising speeds of around 40km/hr in some sections. The half-way point also proved decisive for these riders, as MacKirdy succumbed to fatigue in the headwind and dropped away from the group. Nigel Willoughby, Chris and Lee Stevens rode off 21 minutes, averaging over 37km/hr to gain several minutes on the other competitors, but it wasn't enough to overtake any earlier-starting groups.

At the 40km mark, Eshman took advantage of a hill to break away from Anderson and went on to claim victory, followed several minutes later by the 15-minute grouping, led by Amanda Steele, with third place going to Mick Gray. Lee Stevens claimed fastest time and 6th place.
