"Classic Tiles" Road Series #1, Horsley Park, Sydney, April 22, 2006

Report by Steve Isaksen

Our 2006 Winter Road Season kicked off in fine style last Saturday at Horsley Park. Fine, sunny weather, about 21 degrees and light winds were on hand to ensure perfect road racing conditions. The Classic Tiles series will be run over 5 rounds throughout our road season. Complementing our already attractive race prizemoney will be overall prizes for the series leaders over the 5 rounds. All riders were well briefed at the starting point in Horsley Park Village before rolling through the 1.5km neutral section and the dropping of the flag to commence racing.

Numbers were a little down in "Cafe Moretti" A grade race, due to the Canberra Tour being on the same weekend. This however didn't make the race any less interesting. The usual moves off the front by different riders was in play several times with David Young (BSCC) and Clayton Butler (Macarthur) finally making one stick after almost 7 laps. They held off the chasing bunch for the remaining 2 laps with Young taking the win, $100, and the full 10points. Evergreen Penrith rider Pete Hackney led the bunch home for 3rd.

B grade (54km) was split into 2 groups for today's racing. in B1, Richie Lang (LACC) was the winner here after a very aggressive, hard fought race over 54km. Lang was active in many little breaks throughout the race and each forcing of the pace saw a rider or 2 spat out the back. At the final it was Lang who led home a small lead group from in form Masters 5 rider Michael Hunt (Parra) and Greg Tallentire (LACC) who was left wondering where the finish line was. Christian Homann (LACC), slowly getting back to some winning form, finished a close 4th B2 saw Penrith's Peter Wakefield showing a strong turn of speed at the finish to solo in from a hard chasing bunch led by local, in form Junior Matt Anderson (LACC) and ex Pars-Brest-Paris rider Sean Hardy (LACC) in 3rd. This race also produced several "casualties" due to the fast pace and faster attacks, so only about half the riders were in contention at the final.

The C grade race (45km) was a little less torrid than the others with the bunch remaining largely intact until the finish. There was no shortage of activity though, with CentralCoast visitor Peter Wicklan forcing the pace and jumping up the road at every opportunity. The locals, led by hardman Robbie Dowdall organised the chasers and kept all the breaks in sight before reeling them all in. A 12 rider bunch sprint saw Scott Law (Illawarra) prove too fast for David Leddin (Marconi) with the aggressive Wicklan getting a well deserved 3rd spot D grade (45km) was the only bunch which remained largely intact for the duration with no one risking the effort to break away only to be caught and dropped - the pace wasn't slow though and they plied through their 5 laps very quickly - The experienced heads of Steve Shelley (LACC), Glen Gorman (Marconi) and Phil Wyllie (LACC) doing their best to keep things together - the final desperate last kilometre saw Wyllie take the victory from Penrith's Billy Caldwell and the ever reliable Sharon Hughes (LACC) rounding out the podium.

E grade (36km) is always a mix of youth, experience and other riders having their first race. A big thanks to the grade leaders Nick Bregolin (Dul Hill), John Wickline (Parra) and Gary Balding (LACC) for holding the group together, nurturing the new riders and looking after the whole bunch, while still having a competitive race. Bregolin took the win from John Hopson (Penrith) and Wickline. Special mention to first timer Chester Wong who rode an excellent race, broke away after the first few introductory laps, but unfortunately took a wrong turn near the finish, with victory well in hand - and missed out completely. A tough lesson for Chester but he was very happy after the race and looking forward to the next one.

Thanks to the sponsors of the series - Classic Tiles and Cafe Moretti - this pronises to be an excellent series and it sits very well alongside our long running Ashfield Cycles Tour of August later in the season.
