Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club

Glenvale Crescent Criteriums, Sunday April 9, 2006

Breakaways were the order of the day at Glenvale Crescent, with only the D and E Grade races providing any joy for the sprinters. Although summer looks to be well and truly over, with overcast skies and a cool morning greeting riders, the roads were dry allowing for high speed racing.

For the second week in a row, the winning A Grade break went clear in the opening laps, with Inexa Series leader Pat Shaw (Giant/VIS) jumping clear with Murray Spink (Giant), Warren Knevitt (O'Mara Cycles), Aaron Salisbury (HLP), Danny Kah, Matt Chessum (Fitzroy Cycles), and Stuart Hill. Tyrin Simpson (The Freedom Machine), was the last rider to chase across as the lead group pulled quickly out of sight.

A number of small chase groups in the first half of the race weren't able to make much of a dent in the break's advantage, and although plenty of riders contributed to the pace-setting in the bunch in the second half, there were a few too many passengers happy enough to let the pace slacken when they neared the front of the bunch.

Out front, Shaw and Spink took it in turns to attack their companions; clearly fearing the fast finishes of Salisbury and Knevitt. Hill and Simpson fared worst from the surges, but Knevitt wouldn't be shaken off, taking the win after a tight drag race with Chessum. Shaw and Salisbury claimed the minor places, with Shaw's third place giving him a handy buffer at the top of the Inexa points table.

Andrew Robinson (Spoke'n) went on the attack early in the B Grade race, going clear after fifteen minutes. Andrew Rolland chased across, and the two riders spent the next twenty minutes holding the bunch at bay, before Robinson saw the writing on the wall and returned to the peleton. Rolland persevered for another couple of laps before the bunch made contact, with Tess Downing (Drapac-Porsche Development) and Helen Kelly (VIS) doing much of the chasing.

Steve Morrow was next to try his hand with a solo effort, but after he returned to the fold with ten minutes remaining, Robinson surged again, with Simon Frost (UNO), Brian Nguyen and Gareth Martyn (O'Mara) for company. Combining well, the quartet steadily pulled away and was well clear at the finish, where Robbo took a well deserved win.

Frost sprinted home in second place, in his first race back after hitting the deck in a bunch sprint at Sandown, with Martyn third. The sprinters were lined up for the final prize on offer, but had their party spoiled by Noel Tanner, who attacked in the back straight to steal fifth place. Downing claimed first place in the women's division, just ahead of Kelly.

Mitchell Gregory and Rick Jones (Burnley Finance) rode away with the C Grade race, after attacking early and moving quickly out of sight. After their forty-five minute time trial, it was the youngster Gregory who kicked clear to take the win and earn promotion to B Grade. Shaun Broadbent led the bunch home a minute down, ahead of Matt Ditchfield.

Women's leader in the Inexa Series, Kerrie Howard (Fitzroy) made a rare Sunday outing a winning one, leading home Michelle Murrell and Athena Wilson from a large field of women.

The D Grade bunch sprint saw a tight tussle between first timer Ben Williams and under 15 star Pat Lane (The Freedom Machine), with Lane just getting up despite copping a inadvertent hook from his inexperienced opponent. Sean Carruthers made the move from E Grade successfully, holding on for third by an inch from fast finishing Mark Goudie, while Su-Ann Tan took the women's cash ahead of Radelle Berriman (Terry Hammond Cycles) and Masters World Champion Tabatha Cole.

Pat Shaw looks to have a lock on the Inexa Summer Series (where over $7000 of prizes, including a complete Inexa Carbon C-2/Ultegra 10 and an X-1/105 10 bikes are up for grabs) with two rounds to go, now nine points ahead of Michael Vogt. Kerrie Howard (Fitzroy) remains the Women's leader but has lost third place overall to Mitch Gregory.
