Jack McKay Memorial Handicap - Perthville, NSW, April 9, 2006

By Steve Isaksen

There is nothing quite like a weekend of country handicap racing; Sunday's race was Round 3 of the western division club points series, the Jack McKay Memorial Handicap and a Bathurst CC, Orange CTC, Mudgee CC, Lidcombe-Auburn CC club combine all rolled up in one. Beautiful Central West autumn weather greeted the 60-plus riders at the start point at Perthville Park, just 8km south of Bathurst. The strong, cold westerly wind which characterised yesterday's City vs Country Challenge at Blayney had dissipated to a gentle south westerly breeze. The improved conditions didn't however, flatten out the hills or liven up the dead road surface - these were still present to challenge the riders.

After yesterday's win by the scratch bunch, and the limit bunch getting a huge sniff of a win, today's race was expected to see the strong middle mark bunches make their presence felt. Limit was handicapped at 25minutes with about 13 bunches spread evenly back to Scratch. The course took us towards Rockley for 5km before doing a "turn off U turn" and back to the start line at Perthville. This method of turnaround was the result of some positive discussions between Bathurst Cycle Club, the local council and local Police and involved turning left into a side road for about 30 metres, a U turn in the quieter side road, then a right hand turn back onto the "main" road. The main benefits of this is that there is no "Stop/Go" traffic control required on the main road and allows the local traffic to travel unimpeded - it all worked well and shows that in NSW, a workable process can be found to enable cycle racing to take place on the roads with minimal disruptions to local traffic.

The second leg of the course was a 25km run south towards Trunkey and return, with the major difficulty being a tough 5km climb over Coolooola Hill on the outward journey. With relatively small gaps between the many bunches, it was a matter of waiting for some of the groups to merge before the definitive pattern of the race was set. The 9, 10 and 13 minute bunches did get together fairly early to form a 20 strong group before the turnaround. Some of the hard drivers in this group included Gil Carver (LACC), Steve Brilley (Bathurst), Bathurst's "Great White Hope", Michael Buttsworth and the hard working women Toireasa Gallagher, Jodie Martin (both Bathurst CC) and Belinda Diprose and Kate Charge (both LACC). It was apparent from the turnaround that this group just needed to continue its hard, smooth working rhythm and the win was in reach. Only problem was, though, nobody had said this to the 10 rider strong "Block" group led by Charlie Gascoyne, Mark Chapman, Mal Haig (Orange), Carl Holleman (Mudgee), Nelson Santos (LACC-Classic Tiles), Drew Carter, Bruce Goddard, Owen McPhillamy, Denis Martin, Blair Windsor (Bathurst). After being 2m 20s behind on the big hill after about 20km, and being in front on fastest time at the turnaround, the gap up to the leaders, after a 90km/hr charge back down Colloola Hill was now less than 30 sec and the classic handicap chase was on with only 8km to ride.

The leaders couldn't afford to sit up and take it easy before the finish and they hammered over the Georges Plains Bridge and swept through the village - just one more twist remained - a new finishing point. Immediately after the rail crossing at Georges Plains, a hard left turn and a very sharp steep climb of only about 150 metres before the final 2km to the finish. Those caught out in the wrong gear at this point had a hard chase back to their group. In the end, the leaders did stay away, with "Buttsy" continuing a third generation tradition of Buttsworth family sprinters with a fine win over LACC's Gil Carver, as Steve Brilley took a fine third.

After being told at the turn that they were down on fastest time, the scratch bunch of Dean Windsor (Drapac-Porsche/Bathurst), Mitch Chapman (Orange CTC), Alex Arias (LACC) and David Whyman (Trek-Clarence St) really fired up the afterburners and finally took fastest time honours (by 40sec) in that order. Riders from all bunches who couldn't go with the race pace were straggling in for several minutes afterwards. Fastest time winner Dean Windsor said, "It was always going to be difficult for us scratchies today - yesterday the tough conditions suited us backmarkers but today was their day - full credit to the front and middle markers for both day's racing and I've just topped off a big training week with two extremely hard races which should put me in good form for the Asian Tour in China this coming week." A feature of the weekend of racing was the quality and quantity of the women - 16 women lined up over the two days of racing, and were prominent in each of their groups. An excellent day of racing thanks to the Bathurst CC, led by Mark Windsor, Elaine Ryan and many helpers.
