Anthony Spurgeon (Colnago Caravello) reclaimed his crown of Heffron Park King last night when he reproduced his trademark power sprint to comfortably win the penultimate round of the Trek Bikes Summer Series. The win puts Spurge back into the series lead, equal on 29 points with rival Stewart Campbell (Easts), however on a countback Spurge's three wins against Computer's two gives him the edge for the series first prize of a Trek Madone 5.9 frame going into next week's last race.

It wasn't only the weather which was hot and windy but also the emotions and tempers which ran very high as the battle for supremacy of Heffron Park continued long after the final sprint. In the end, however, the good sportsmanship and diplomacy which is a unique attribute of the Portuguese prevailed as Eastern Suburbs President and race handicapper Frank Conceicao graciously congratulated the Colnago Caravello and Randwick Botany sponsor Frank Fortuna on taking the triple crown of overall winner, sprint king and C grade titles.

C grade, as they have threatened on more than one occasion in recent weeks, launched themselves into a frenzied pace over the opening laps and almost stayed away for the win to deny the A grade protagonists a shot at the points. In the end the wind once again took it's toll but not before a breakaway group of ten C grade riders managed to hold off until two laps to go when they were swamped by an A grade train being driven relentlessly by Colnago Caravello duo of Ben Isaksen and Peter McDonald.

Into the final lap the lead bunch was down to a dozen riders as Peter McDonald laid it on the line for his team mate Spurge. Computer on the other hand was without his Easts lead out train of Stuart Dangerfield and Paul Rowney this week and decided that attack was the best form of defence by leading the sprint out early. This tactic played perfectly into Spurge's hands as he has mastered the art of coming off the wheel from 150m out at Heffron, and he didn't disappoint to take what appearedto be a comfortable win, but was clearly well earned and well judged.

Ben Isaksen completed the double for Colnago Caravello to take second and place himself into third outright in the series pointscore. Robbie Cater (Randwick Botany/FRF Couriers) backed up his strong finish last week to get over a disappointed Computer for third. Liam Kelly (Randwick Botany/FRF Couriers) rounded out the top five and also put the Sprint King beyond doubt when he extended his lead in the sprint comp by picking up the points in the three to go sprint.

The highlight for Easts was John Kenny notching up his fourth B grade win, not to mention three places in the overall point so he deservedly wins the King of B grade title for the season. Chris Reynolds easily claimed the undisputed C grade crown with another strong finish and takes an unbeatable eight point lead into the last race.

Next week's showdown still promises to be a thriller, because if A grade do round up the front groups, the title of 2005 Trek Bikes Summer Champion is still up for grabs...
