Southern Veterans Cycling Club

Adelaide, South Australia, March 6, 2005

Gavin McMahon made a welcome return to the winners circle to take a well earned victory and his first for 2005 in a challenging 48km Club Handicap event this weekend. Surprisingly, this is only McMahons second victory with the club. He will be pleased with today's result over a tough course - it was nearly dominated by a single group once again, with the 15 minute group, made up of some in form riders, working their way through the outmarkers and taking the front at the climb out of Bakers Gully.

However, a very large and fast moving peloton made up of riders from 6 through to 10 minute groups spoiled the party, with McMahon using his strength and experience in taking the sprint. The 15 minute group did very well still picking up three major places. The evergreen Tom Trowbridge was most inspiring, having started with the 23 minute group he hung on to the leading groups as they took in the outmarkers and was no slouch in the sprint, picking up a very strong sixth in fine company.

Carolyn Salisbury took a firm grip on the club points rankings, taking another result behind a very much in form Barry Bullivant. Salisbury has collected three results, two of them victories, and leads the club rankings ahead of new rider Brian Wilson and multiple club champion James Russell. Russell picked up another fastest time prize today, showing his potency in the sprint for the line - once again scratch could not make up the time on the earlier starters.

Bullivant is returning from injury caused by yet another careless driver last year crashing in to the back of his bike while he was making a right turn in the Adelaide CBD. He was off his bike through injury for a considerable time and then had to wait even longer for the insurance to replace his written-off bike. He too is making an impact on the club rankings and was successful last week in the Open event at Lobethal, sponsored by the VLCC. Brian Dey took his second result for the year claiming fourth, and fifth was a return to the results for Stan Bastiras.
