After gloating about a few weeks of fine weather last week, it was back to winter conditions this weekend! Although raining in most places at day break, Glenvale Crescent remained dry, and the races were on.
No first lap heroics from Brendan 'Snowy' Rowbotham this week in A Grade, with the entire bunch allowed to clip in before the attacks started! Danny Kah featured in the first substantial move, along with David Sturt (Giant/Pro-Motion) and MTB specialist Murray Spink (Goldcross Cycles). The trio were reeled in before half way, setting things up for a very promising attack by Nathan Wise (Lloyd Morgan), James Maebus (Raceline) and Sturt. When Rowbotham bridged, the gap opened rapidly from the disorganised bunch, and the break looked gone for all money.
Last to make contact was pursuit specialist Richard England (Le Tour Cycles), who flew across the gap with blistering speed. Unfortunately for his new companions, England's appearance and the subsequent acceleration cracked Sturt, and Wise was also in trouble. With the break imploding, the bunch was quickly back in contact, playing perfectly into Tommy Nankervis' hands, as he sprinted to his third win on the trot and his ninth for the season. Warren Knevitt (O'Mara Cycles) made a long overdue return to the podium with second ahead of Brad Norton (VIS) and Rowbotham.
The large contingent from Burnley Finance/Aqua Pure did their best to control the B Grade bunch, sending a succession of solo riders off the front. Their efforts proved to be in vain, with Stuart Hastings and the O'Mara boys too vigilant to let anyone escape for more than a couple of laps. After settling into a comfortable pace for the second half of the race, things came alive for the final three laps as the trains tried to set things up for their designated sprinters. Glen Wright (Giramondo) led into the final corner, but couldn't hold on into the head wind, as Luke Pledger (O'Mara) and Wayne Andrew came past to take the top two spots. Peta Mullens (Giant) survived the last lap scramble upright this week to take out the Women's division, hot on the heels of the outright place getters.
C Grade started quickly, with the bunch splitting a few laps in under the impetus of Curtis Yirildrim, Gordon Minty, Spiros Mouzakis, John Pritchard (Bicycle Superstore) and Jonathan Claydon (Monash Uni). With a dozen of the stronger riders making the split, things looked a little grim in the bunch until Louisa Judd (Hampton Cycles) awoke from her slumber and pulled the bunch back together. Yirildrim burst from the bunch again just before the final three laps, working well with Michael Milewski. He left Milewski behind a lap and half from home, and showed no sign of slowing as he took the win which moves him to B Grade. The unlucky Milewski was caught in the back straight, with Rockhampton visitor Rohan Smith surviving the arctic condtions to lead the bunch home ahead of Andy Cameron and Minty. Liv Gluchowska (Hampton Cycles) surprised Inexa Series leader Andrea Bishop with a good sprint to pinch the Women's division.
D Grade was decided with a bunch sprint, but not before the youngest rider in the race, Aaron Eynaud, did his best to steal the win. He attacked with John Groves and Mark Procter at the half way mark, but the trio wasn't able to hold off the tenacious bunch. A fall crossing the line at three to go took out four riders, none with any real damage, with the sprint taken by Paul Adler from juniors Nick Chilton and Mitchell Gregory. Celia Vandestadt (Pro-Motion) was the best of the Women, out kicking Lindsay Brown (O'Mara).
Tommy Nankervis extended his lead in the $7000 Inexa - Team Alex Summer Series with yet another win. Aaron Salisbury and Wayne Andrew are in a tight tussle for second, while Andrea Bishop has a clear lead for the Women's prize. Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue Tuesday evenings at Sandown starting at 6.30pm for all grades, with access to the circuit via Sandown Road from 6pm. Sunday morning racing is at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2). C, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and B Grade ride at 10am.
All holders of 2005 Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts novice racing clinics at Glenvale Crescent.
