Great Britain pursuit rider Mark Cavendish won round 9 of the Trek Bikes Summer Series when he outsprinted another quality field on a hot and extremely windy night at Heffron Park. Cavendish is part of the Shane Sutton managed Great Britain Under 23 Endurance Academy track squad who recently competed in the Sydney Track World Cup and lines up in the NSW State Team Pursuit Titles this weekend. The five man squad, along with Colombia Selle Italia pros Trent Wilson and Russell Van Hout and the MG Xpower duo of Troy Glennan and Shaun Higgerson ensured the A grade field once again had a truly international feel.

Another large turnout of over 90 riders lined up to do battle at Sydney's popular Heffron Park circuit, however before racing got underway one minute's silence was observed in memory of one of Randwick Botany's favourites son's Bryan Martin, who sadly passed away after collapsing while out training in Brisbane last week. Bryan was a very talented cyclist who loved the Heffron Park circuit and will be most fondly remembered for his unique riding outfit of 'stubbies' black shorts. With racing underway it was C grade who decided to throw away the script when a small breakaway group led by Chris Reynolds (Randwick Botany/FRF Couriers) and Steve Pearson (Lidcombe) decided to make a race of it and opened up a considerable gap, much to the displeasure of Easts directeur sportif, Senhor Conceicao.

B grade, meanwhile, were doing their best to make a race of it but in the 50kph+ headwind their best wasn't quite enough as the A grade locomotive accounted for them just prior to the sprint prime at seven laps to go. A small collision which sent several riders cross country split the lead group up even further as the big hitters continued to apply the pressure in the blustery conditions. By three laps to go the lead group was down to 10 riders, and again the most notable absentee was series contender Anthony Spurgeon (Colnago-Caravello). The MG Xpower boys Glennan and Higgerson, along with Wilo and the Poms kept the pressure on to ensure the original C grade escapees were rounded with a little over one lap to go.

Despite Paul Rowney's best efforts to lay a solid platform for his Easts team mate and series leader Stewart Campbell in the sprint, it was a clear victory for the visiting Manx pursuiter Mark 'Cav' Cavendish who was a key member of the GB teams pursuit silver medal effort at the Sydney World Cup. Paul Rowney capped off a solid nights ride by narrowly holding out Sammy Lee (NSWIS/St George) for second. Another member of the GB silver medal pursuit team, Thomas White, grabbed fourth place and for the second week in a row, Stewart 'Computer' Campbell snuck home for fifth to grab another valuable series point in the race for the series first prize of a Trek Madone 5.9 frame.

In the race for B grade honours, Scott Callum (Easts) showed his Australian Masters Champs preparation is right on track with an impressive ride - the only B grade rider to finish with the front group. In the C grade finish Chris Reynolds (Randwick Botany/FRF Couriers) was too strong for his C grade breakaway companions and has edged one point clear of Todd Dunn (Easts) in the C grade pointscore. The only competition which still has a clear leader is the Sprint King pointscore in which Liam Kelly (Randwick Botany/FRF Couriers) will take a handy eleven lead into the last three races.
