Southern Veterans Cycling Club (Vic)

Cora Lyn, Victoria, July 31, 2005

By Pat Ruys

Well there was a good turn out for our first Tracker White Handicap - 133 starters, and with prize money Totaling $4,500.00 courtesy of the generous support of EVERCLEAR CONSTRUCTIONS on offer, it's no wonder why!

Tracker White is Southern Vets - he was there when the club first formed, and that was 30 years ago - and he's still with us. He's been on committees, past President and still our Club Vice President. He's one of the back bones of the club, giving President Frank Barlow and our Secretary Bill Upston support, all the time. Just a couple of weeks ago he had to go into hospital on a Sunday afternoon; he still showed up in the morning to give us a hand marshalling. which I thought was fantastic.

Using the flat Cora Lyn/Nar Nar Goon/Bayes course on a windy but fine day, limit stayed away for the first three sprints - lap 1 - Nar Nar Goon won by Kate May, a new rider on her first outing with the club. The second Sprint was at Bayles, won by Gail Burke, and the third sprint was on lap 2 at Nar Nar Goon, won by big Rob Malasseca.

The 26-minute bunch was caught by the 21-minute bunch at Bayles on the first lap; I know this because I was there for a short time. The scratch riders didn't get to the lead until Bayles on the second lap with about 5km to go. At the final Sprint two riders got away, with David Sturt winning and Ron Amos getting fastest time. Then Ray Turner came in for second, Andrew Nichol third and our handicapper Geoff Thompson led the bunch home to come fourth just in front of Ian McGeogh, Frank Cipriano, Phil Grant, Mal Sawford, Bill Murray and Ken Ford. First lady was Debra Hobbs and first rider over 70 years was Nick Witkamp. This was followed by the presentations, BBQ and a special thanks to our sponsor for the day, EVERCLEAR CONSTRUCTIONS and Tracker White for being the great bloke he is, who works so tirelessly for the club.
