Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club

Glenvale Crescent, Melbourne, January 23, 2005

Traditionally the Australia Day weekend is a quiet one for local racing, competing with the Tour Down Under in South Australia, the Wangaratta Track Carnival and the Audax Alpine Classic in Bright. Expecting the usual low numbers, I joined the hordes invading Bright, leaving Glenvale Crescent in the capable hands of Lorraine Collings, Ann Johnstone and Doug Moody. Over two hundred arrived on the start line, meaning the three amigos had their hands well and truly full, and I doubt I'll get another leave pass this season!

A Grade saw a return to the winner's list for Robert Tighello (Richmond Cyclery), leading home Bay Classic fifth place finisher Simon Clarke (VIS) and Aaron Salisbury (HLP/Ridewiser), who had made the trip back to Melbourne after taking out the Wangaratta Criterium on Friday night. Nick Gates (BikeNOW) will make the jump to A Grade after leading home sponsor Warren Cay and Darren Weir in a mammoth bunch of over seventy riders. Swiss star Priska Doppmann (Univega) took out the women's division, from team mate Christiane Soeder and Apryl Eppinger (VIS).

C Grade saw Marcus Schell earn his first win, beating Gordon Minty and Michael Thomas. Thomas' third place points and promotion to B Grade are enough to vault him into the lead of the $7000 Inexa - Team Alex Summer Series. Melissa Kah sprinted home aboard her new Trek to claim the Women's prize, ahead of Louisa Judd and Monique Hanley. Dean Turner was too good for the D Grade bunch, taking the win, with second and third places going to the girls: Andrea Bishop and Kim Peterson. Bishop's fine result maintains her grip on the Team Alex Women's prize.

Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue every Tuesday night with Twilight Racing at Sandown starting at 6.30pm for all grades, with access to the circuit via Sandown Road from 6pm. Sunday mornings are at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2). C, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and B Grade ride at 10am. All holders of 2005 Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts novice racing clinics at Glenvale Crescent.
