King Spurge back in the winners circle

After the first two rounds of the 2005 Trek Bikes Summer Series were dominated by Australian pro riders Matt White (Cofidis) and Steve Wooldridge (Comnet Senges), local rider Anthony Spurgeon (Caravello) reclaimed his Heffron crown in round 3 last night with one of his trademark power sprints. The win places Spurge seven points clear in the Series from the next local rider Stewart Campbell (Easts) in the race for the Series prize of a new Trek Madone 5.9 frame.

A relatively calm evening (by Heffron Park standards) greeted the field of 80 riders as they lined up in cloudy, but warm conditions. Even the arguments were calm last night as Commissaire Richard Jenkins outlined the definition of a mechanical and the last 3 lap rule for the benefit of the field. A smallish bunch of only 16 A grade riders looked to have their work cut out as they gave away a 1min 30sec start to the 65 riders in B and C grades, but five laps into the race the time gaps were plummeting, and two laps later the A grade train had accounted for B grade.

The Sprint King competition, which has sprint primes on offer at seven, five and three laps to go always livens the racing up, and B grade master blaster Antonnio Iannacito made sure he went clear in this competition by winning the first sprint and taking second in the next prime. C grade were rounded up with four laps to go - it was time for the big hitters to stretch out the bunch. First to go was Stewart Campbell, who opened up a decent gap on the bunch with three laps to go, thanks to some subtle pedalling back in the bunch from team mate and MTB champ, Paul Rowney. A massive half lap turn from Sammy Lee (NSWIS/St George) then had everyone back together at the bell.

Obviously stung from his DNF the previous week, King Spurge was taking no chances this time around and led it out almost the entire length of the straight to claim the win. Ben Isaksen (Lidcombe), sporting his new go fast mohawk and coming off some fine form at the Bay Series, got home for second in front of a fast finishing Mathew Lucas (Randwick Botany). Rounding out the top five were Brian Appleyard who is gearing up for a hilly ride in the Tour of Wellington next week, and Stewart Campbell, who picked up the last point.

The battle for the B grade podium was won by wily junior Keegan Aitchison (Southern Cross) when he timed his run perfectly to beat Scott Callum (Easts) and Chris Guillan (Southern Cross) to the line. In C grade Todd Dunn (Easts) backed up two second places over the past fortnight in C grade to win last night and take a four point lead in the C grade Series from Tom Reid who also stayed in the points by finishing third.

Next week is a busy schedule at Heffron Park with back to back events - Round 4 on Tuesday night followed by the 12th Annual Joseph Sunde Memorial Criteriums on the Australia Day holiday on Wednesday morning. Masters start at 8am, the 30km B,C,D handicap is on at 9am with the feature race starting at 10am - $20 entry is on the line. All proceeds raised on the day are donated to the Childrens Cancer Institute, so get along to Heffron Park and celebrate Australia Day with some great racing for a great cause.
