Berryman makes it six

Greg Berryman took a well deserved sixth victory with the Southern Veterans this weekend in a hard fought race run in perfect conditions. He led home, in a bunched sprint finish, a large pack of determined riders who had worked tirelessly throughout the race and just managed with the finishing line in sight to take up the remaining outmarkers.

Berryman has had consistent results with the club since beginning in 2002 when he took an impressive three victories. Since then he has always tallied more than twenty points featuring in a minimum of five races in the major places each year. His last win was in March 2004 in the Bernard Bushell Trophy event.

Steve Buck took second on the line from new rider Jason Hagon competing in his first event with the club. Buck matched his best result with the club since starting only last October. In his short time with the club he has already picked up four major results, but the victory once again just eluded him. Club stalwart and consistency expert Bob Seymour took his first result of the year to claim fourth. This was his thirty-fifth major result with the club since 2001 and indicates he will again feature in the top ten riders for another season.

David Cox became the first rider in 2005 to feature in the major placings twice, taking another fifth spot to match his result taken only last week. Fastest time was once again taken by James Russell who fought in vain to take up the field. The very large peloton formed on the second lap and made it very difficult for scratch as the wind increased as the race went on. The large bunch had plenty of willing hands and they were able to spread the workload and maintain a high road speed keeping the smaller scratch group at bay.

Barry Bullivant on the comeback after a serious accident with a car while training in 2004 featured in the minor places today and could have stolen it himself but for a minor mishap in the bunch during the sprint for the line. Bullivant and his much smaller group were swallowed up by the fast moving peloton with the finishing line only about 500m away. The next club event graded scratch races at the Willunga Rose garden on January 30th has been changed to a charity event to assist victims of the recent tragic bushfires in South Australia. All nominations on the day will be donated to the bush fire appeal fund.
