Early morning showers cleared, and the roads dried, allowing all grades to race in good conditions. Mick Hollingworth's Novice Clinic had a bumper turnout, with eleven young juniors learning the ropes. Fittingly, one of Mick's longest serving pupils, Dale Reith, showed signs of his recent improvement by running out a convincing winner in the dash to the line, and looks like he will soon be ready to mix it up with the seniors in D Grade.

The A Grade race saw a flurry of early attacks kept under control, with the bunch very watchful. Twenty minutes in, HLP/Ridewiser team mates Rob Crowe and Aaron Salisbury succeeded in snapping the elastic, with only Danny Kah able to join the move. With all three committed and driving, the break was soon gone for good, eventually lapping the bunch in the final minutes. Crowe and Salisbury continued straight past, and put on a good sprint for the win, with Crowe holding off his apprentice by less than half a wheel. Kah claimed third by finishing with the lapped bunch, which was led home by Warren Knevitt (O'Mara Cycles) from Luke Weir and Chris Boone (Fitzroy Cycles).

The opening thirty minutes of the B Grade race were run at amazing speed, with the big bunch in single file and touching 50kmh for most of the journey. Unsurprisingly, at that speed there were no significant breaks! The pace eased a little in the second half, allowing Simon Shaw (Nepean Cycles) to have a dip off the front. Others to try included regular attackers Peter McWeeney and James Shepherdson, while Belinda Goss (TIS/Cyclingnews.com) prepared for the Australian Track Championships by infiltrating a number of moves. At three to go, a group of six containing Goss and outstanding juniors Leigh Howard (Evolution) and Peter Johnstone (O'Mara Cycles) were five seconds clear, but were reeled in at the bell. They were able to stay at the pointy end of the race, however, with Howard sprinting home to a convincing win ahead of Johnstone, and first timer Julian Dutton and his mentor Warren Cay (both BikeNOW). Goss sprinted well before fading slightly in the final metres, but hung on for fifth outright.

Both the C and D Grade races also finished with bunch kicks. Trent Brown made it two in a row at Glenvale, winning by a few lengths and earning promotion to B Grade. Best of the rest was Carl Retschko from the consistent Michael Thomas, who is now only one result away from joining Brown in B Grade. In a tightly contested Women's division, Michelle Murrell came out on top of Louisa Judd (Hampton Cycles). Kevin Delaney led out of the final corner in the D Grade finish, and was strong enough to hold off the charge, relegating club mate Darrin Hobbs to second, with Jordan Griffiths and Andrew Donohue filling the minor places. Nana Jernstrom outsprinted Inexa-Team Alex Women's leader Andrea Bishop to win the Women's division.

With Tom Walker missing in action, his lead in the $7000 Inexa - Team Alex Summer Series has been cut to only two points by Wayne Andrew. Michael Thomas is up to third, while Andrea Bishop is the best of the Women in sixth overall. Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue every Tuesday night with Twilight Racing at Sandown starting at 6.30pm for all grades, with access to the circuit via Sandown Road from 6pm. Sunday mornings are at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2). C, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and B Grade ride at 10am. All holders of 2005 Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20.. For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts novice racing clinics at Glenvale Crescent.
