Pulo King Of Sprint

Tony Pulo outsprinted a twelve strong leading bunch in an exciting finish to win Sunday's 27km handicap race. Pulo crossed the line with only a tyre width to spare from Joe Chiaverini, with a similar margin to Joe Perriera, in the closest race finish in recent memory.

The thirty starters were organized into eight groups, with eight minutes between the scratch and limit bunches. Wayne Farrugia pulled away from the limit bunch during the first lap. David Hull and Joe Williams, making a return to racing after nine years, keenly chased after Farrugia, trying to shorten his two-minute advantage. The middle bunches were working together well, with the three minute bunch having caught the four and four and a half minute bunches early in the second of three laps.

Scott Defina was driving the block bunch hard, eventually leaving his bunch at the end of the second lap to try and bridge to the six minute group and also trying to stay away from Mark Jewel and Tim Morris, riding from the scratch mark. Farrugia still had a forty second lead at the start of the last lap - but riding on his own, and with all of the bunches barring scratch having now combined, his lead would not last much longer.

Peter Evans led out an early sprint with 700 metres to go. Riders fanned out across the road and it looked like four riders would cross the line together, but with a late cavalier surge Pulo managed to grunt his wheel over the line marginally ahead of Chiaverini, Perriera and Adam Crowther. Fifth place went to Daniel Daly with Hans Battaerd and Mark Davis sixth and seventh respectively, all within a bike length of Pulo. A valiant Mark Jewel, having ridden half the race on his own, took fastest time by seven seconds from Daniel Daly.

Next week's race is a 27km scratch race with group 10 to marshall.
