Scratch race - January 2, 2005

Happy New Year For Morris

A small field of only twenty-four riders kicked off the year in the first Illawarra Cycle Club race for 2005. Due to the small field officials decided to combine the A and B grade riders into one bunch. In the spirit of the holiday season, the bunch was quite happy to share the work around with nobody allowed to establish a break. After the turn at Hooker Hill on the last lap, Keith Bennett decided it was time to test his legs. He opened up a break on the field and was soon joined by Adrian Cooper, Tony Pulo and David McMaster. The four pushed on toward the finish - however, sensing the danger as Tim Morris and Jeff Gray bridged the gap with Garry Mandy, the breakaway group was too large to continue working and the field regrouped for the inevitable sprint.

With 400m to go Cooper jumped the bunch and opened up what appeared a race winning lead. He started to fade within sight of the line and Morris timed his sprint to perfection to take the A grade race from Cooper. McMaster was the third A grade rider across the line with Bennett close behind in fourth. Mandy was the first B grade rider home with Pulo and Gray filling the minor placings.

In C grade Vince O'Dwyer hid in the pack until 700m to go before timing his jump to perfection to clearly win the race. David Hull had tried to break away from the bunch on the first lap but strong work from Nicole Joyce and Rob Cummins, enjoying his first race at the club, managed to chase him down. Dave Morris tried his luck in the second lap, and after half a lap on his own was also caught. Morris tried one final time to break away after the final turn for home but was again caught by the chasing bunch. O'Dwyer jumped clear before the sprint could start, leaving Scott Turnbull to outsprint Hull for second with Peter Kelly fourth and Scott Law fifth.
