Burke triumphs

Tony Burke won the 2004 Intercub series by the largest margin to date.

Burke's impressive sprinting prowess saw him take second place to Goulburn's Michael Bentley in the Southern Highlands final race of the series. The race was held at Breadalbane last Saturday.

Bentley had been a driving force along with Hans Batteard, Daniel Daly and John Vaughan in the four minute bunch. Their bunch captured all of the bunches in front of them with 10km of the race to go and had to keep the pace on as the scratch riders were closing fast.

Burke had started off the seven minute mark and not only managed to stay with the four minute bunch but akso work with them.

The lead group splintered in the final kilometers as the speed lifted, till there were only eleven riders left in contention. Illawarra was well represented by four riders.

In the sprint for the line Burke was second, Batteard third, Daly fourth and Dean Kelly seventh. Vince O'Dwyer had ridden the race of the life off the twenty minute mark and came in twelth.

The overal series results saw Burke a cinvincing winner with Daly third, Tony Pulo fourth, Kerry Augustson and Kelly equal sixth.

Illawarra was second in the club competition and Daniel Silveri was sixth in the fastest time competition.

Next weeks race is a two person time trial. Riders will be partnered up on the day to make the teams as equal as possible.
