Glenvale Crescent Criteriums - Mulgrave, October 17, 2004

By Mal Sawford

Sunday was another great day and another good field at Glenvale Crescent, despite clashing with both the Sun Tour and Melbourne's massive 'Round the Bay in a Day' charity ride. A Grade saw an early attack from Brendan Rowbotham (Fitzroy Cycles) and David Sturt (Pro-Motion Bicycles/Colnago) hold off the bunch for much of the race, before the field regrouped for a bunch kick. Former track sprinter turned endurance rider Barry Woods (ACR) still has the speed, taking the win from Glenn Hutchinson, Dylan Boone (Fitzroy Cycles), Matt Shea, Nathan Wise and Geordan Murray (both Lloyd Morgan - Bike Pro riders).

The sprinters were finally denied in B Grade, with a five man break escaping to share the honours. Jan Wilhoeft (Jones Cycles) was fastest at the finish from trackie Andrew Shannon (Kathy Watt's Personal Training), Geoff Galvin, Peter McWeeney and Martin Bole. Richard Knight lead the bunch home, not far ahead of Athens Silver Medalist Katie Mactier (Fitzroy Cycles), who was straight back on the winner's list after her post Olympic rest. Mary Rogers was run wide on the final lap and ended up on the grass, but fortunately escaped injury.

C Grade saw the field intact at the bell, with the sprint taken out by Blackburn youngster Vaughan Bowman from Kym Scrutton, Michael Stankovic and Tom Walker. Tom Gallagher (Team Alex) finished just outside the prizemoney. Ferne Walklate maintained her undefeated run in the Women's division, taking the win ahead of Tarna Schmidt (O'Mara Cycles). Will Tehan won the D Grade bunch sprint with a convincing finish ahead of Daniel Lay, Neil Robinson (aboc Cycle Coaching) and Nick Groves, with Joanne Sabbatini the best of the Women's Division.

Thanks to Ann Johnstone, Lorraine Collings Doug Moody and Matthew Wright for running racing on the day, and to David Buntin for supervising E Grade this week. Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue every Sunday at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2). C, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and B Grade ride at 10am. Tuesday night Twilight Racing at Sandown will start on November 9. All holders of Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. 2005 licenses are also now available. For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts racing clinics in E Grade. For further details, go to www.carnegiecycling.com.au.
