"Race To The Sun" - October 9 and 10, 2004.

By Peter Winton

It finally happened! The Richard Hale inspired revival of the "Race To The Sun", a former prestigious event on the Mildura Cycling calendar of the late 1980's early 1990's took place over the weekend of October 9th and 10th.

This revival focussed on a teams approach, and consisted of a criterium, 2 road races and a team time trial, all scratch events.

Suffice to say, the weekend was an all round success. At least one or two riders from the depths of the bunch have excited officials as to their form and future prospects. In this regard, 14-year-old Samuel Priest is the key figure. Having his first real hit-out against fellow club members (more physically mature but some not mentally so) at scratch level, young Samuel proved he will be a rider to be reckoned with in the future.

Steve Fenwick drew raised eyebrows with his hidden (and now exposed) riding ability. What a shame for our Club, Steve is heading back down south to his home turf later this year.

Greg Scott showed tremendous grit to return to the fray given he was not so long ago in all sorts of bother with a nasty shoulder injury. Tom Athorn and Dave Digby also stood out for their "never give up" attitude in races not suited to their level of cycling exposure.

The sheer capacity of the district's leading triathletes in Kevin Tankard, Scott Giles, Peter Mulhearn and mountain biker Nathan Floramo to "captain" their teams and provide the legpower to keep all others honest is duly noted and respected.

There were many great individual efforts witnessed this weekend and all those responsible would have to possess some inkling of who they are.

To the many volunteer marshals from our sister clubs, the triathlon and mountainless clubs, a big thank you. Your support was invaluable and appreciated.

Next Club race is the "Spring Classic" on October 30, a 16km time trial and a handicap road race on the Riverside circuit. The L & V Westcott perpetual trophy is the highlight, narrowly in front of the bbq and beer.
