Tasmanian Road Championships

Gowrie Park, Tasmania, Saturday May 22, 2004

By Matt Conn

Launceston's Karl Menzies has added another road race to his 2004 tally and another State road championship to his impressive tally built up since leaving the sport of triathlon.

Menzies dominated the latter stages of the 2004 road championship, run on a testing course around Gowrie Park and Cethana on Saturday.

An early breakaway from Dylan Forbes left the major favourites for the race watching one another as the New South Welshman built up a handy lead. A second lap move from Matt Goss, Wes Sulzberger, Steve Rossendell and Menzies caught and dropped Forbes and built up a lead of 1min 27 by the top of the climb.

A chase group of eight, including Nathan Clarke who was riding hard to close the gap, brought back the leaders by the bottom of the Browns Hill climb on the final lap.

Menzies and Rossendell tried to go again on the climb and it was Menzies who eventually got the gap and went out alone, managing to build an impressive four minute lead by the time he crossed the line 20km later.

Legana's Josh Wilson was the winner of the under 23 championship, while Launceston fireman Darren Cook was the first rider home in the Masters category.
