Morris aggressive but Wall triumphant

The large numbers of riders at races continued last Saturday with fifty six riders taking part in the 35km scratch races held over four grades.

Tim Morris put the other riders in the A grade 35km scratch race on notice that he intended to make it a tough race when he attacked on the first of four laps on the climb up Hooker hill. He was away for a lap and a half before Daniel Silveri joined him. They were then caught by five other riders, with Josh Wall and Adam Rourke doing some big turns.

Wall put the pressure on going up Hooker hill on the third lap and was joined by Rourke. There were only four riders left in contention and the gap slowly opened up to the two leaders. Morris bided his time and then bridged across to the other two with a big effort.

The three opened up a considerable gap to the chasers who had all got back together. Two kilometres from the finish Wall surged and an exhausted Morris lost contact, Wall again surged on the final rise before the finish and Rourke couldn't hold his wheel.

Walls winning time was 51:04, just over a 40km/h hour average. Rourke was second and Morris third. In his first race for many years Mark Jewel showed that it wouldn't be long before his name is on the winning list.

The sixteen riders in the B grade race were extremely evenly matched with no one rider able to stamp their authority on the race. Andrew Stewart, Michael Comensoli, Brian Joyce, Peter Evans, Ben Lohse, Steve Newman and Lue Dale all put big efforts in. In fact, all the riders contributed to a very tough race.

Dale led the sprint out but there were five riders in a line across the road for the last hundred metres. John Drury was just able to edge in front of Stewart to take the win with Comensoli third, bunch time was 54:53.

C grade had a large bunch of eighteen riders and again very few shirked their turn on the front. Ernie Hall had another big race as did Joel Penson, Tony Burke, Phil Jones and Dean Kelly. New member David McMaster rode very well for his first race.

The sprint finish was very close with Penson just holding off a fast finishing Burke and Turnbull, they crossed the line in that order for a time of 57:14. David Hull had a strong race in D grade. After doing a lot of the pace setting during the race he still had enough left to sprint away from Colin Shaw for a well deserved win. Megan Wilke rode very well to cross the line in third place. Hulls time was 1:02:43.

Next week's race is a 45km scratch race. The Illawarra Interclub has been changed to June 5th at Gunning.
