Junior Clarke takes out A Grade

The first of Carnegie Caulfield's contributions to the Regional Winter fixture was run in near perfect autumn conditions, with clear skies and barely a breath of wind. A short section of road works gave a brief European cobbled atmosphere, but all riders survived the test unscathed. Adding to the Euro feel was the hard core Keith Revell fans who had set up camp outside their farm, and cheered their hero Keith, and all the other competitors, complete with sign and drums!
Simon Clarke (BikeNOW) celebrated his selection to the Junior Worlds Track Team with a good win in the premier A Grade race. The bunch stayed largely intact for the first lap, but splintered second time through the hills with Nathan Wise and Geordan Murray setting the pace.
Clarke was able to close the gap to the leaders, but towed noted sprinter Aaron Salisbury (Fitzroy Cycles) up to the select lead group. Salisbury was unable to capitalize on a lead out from team mate Matt Chessum in the dash to the judges, with Clarke taking the sprint ahead of Wise and Murray.
The B Grade followed a similar pattern, with the bunch arriving en masse at the base of the Ripplebrook climb on the second lap. Young climbing sensation Chris Tassell (The Freedom Machine) powered away from the bunch on the course's longest climb, but was unable to hold off a well organized chase from the bunch.
Cam Hunter (Genovese Coffee/ACR) had the legs in the sprint, holding off sprint specialist Darren Cathie (aboard his brand new Trek Project One), Matt Collins and Andrew Bryant (Genovese Coffee/ACR).
Local veteran Geoff Thomson (Bikeland) proved too quick for the C Grade bunch, taking the bunch sprint by three lengths, and earning promotion to B Grade next time round. Pete Johnson, Clint Van Beven and Brett Eldridge filled the minor placings, with Carmen Gould finishing with the lead group to take out the Women's Division. Janine Donaldson time trialled home to claim second place ahead of Audrey Quick (Quick Cycle).
Daniel Noy showed the D Grade bunch a clean set of wheels in the one lap D Grade race, with only Michael Downing (Le Tour Cycles) able to follow. Michael Gallagher led the chasers home for third ahead of new club member Rod Kitchen. Emily Phillips (Le Tour) took a good win in the Women's Division, overhauling Erin Downing (Le Tour) who had made the steep climb to Costers Road look easy. Despite the unwavering support of his fan club, local favorite Keith Revell finished towards the tail of the field.
The race would not have been a success without the contribution of an extensive list of support car drivers and marshals who are required to satisfy Police and Vic Roads permit requirements and ensure a safe race. Thanks to Lorraine Collings and Gemma Goyne, who handled entries and judging, and Mike Clarke who organized the traffic management. Drivers were Mike Goldie, Eva Wilhoeft, John Simpson, Jon Noonan, Ferne Walklate, Roger Byrne, Tina Downing and Shireen Cullen-Foote, while Jacinta, Silvia Revell, Ian Van Driel, Rohan James, Mick Hollingworth and James Shepherdson waved the corner marshall flags, with Robert Johnstone and Grant Jamieson the Stop/Go Traffic Controllers.
