Stefani takes Lunarfest A Grade

Welcome one and all to the penultimate stage of the Mildura-Coomealla Cycling Club’s 2004 summer season. Red Cliffs is an irrigation settlement approx 20kms south of Mildura on the Calder Highway (towards Melbourne for those with limited compass bearing skills), and at the end of March every year the local Rotary Club holds a festival (Lunarfest) in the town at which clowns dressed in pretty colours and riding bikes cavort about.

There appeared to be something of a good number of spectators albeit mostly girlfriends, wives and children watching their chosen (or otherwise) male partners/parent do the dance of a thousand pedal strokes.

Damon Stefani, a visitor (ex local junior cyclist) from the Adelaide Cycling Club faced off in the A grade crit (45 minutes) and proceeded to remind the locals of what talent he has by riding too well for an easy win. Kev Tankard, tapering for another triathlon somewhere, for second with Nathan Summerhayes in third place after securing the intermediate sprint. Scott Giles took the opportunity to mix it with the Club’s A grade tonite seeing he wasn’t challenging for the B grade points jersey. His presence made it 6 riders in this bunch.

In B grade there were 8 souls out for punishment. A reduced number due to the “Murray to Moyne” charity bike ride and some others “sitting off” on the sidelines. Dion Bassi-Anstee and Richard Hale were the two engaging in the greatest challenge with Brendan Liddle needing to snatch a win from somewhere to get back in the jersey hunt.

Bassi-Anstee took the intermediate sprint money and proceeded to ride the rest of us off our (aging) legs. Well, he’s not 18 and I’m not quite 48, years I’m talking, get my drift?

Brendan Liddle took an early fall at one of the 3 technical turns on this circuit, left some human DNA behind and most likely as many skid marks inside his knicks as there was on the road! He regained composure, chased for 2 laps and took the lead again. Dion and Brendan went one, two with Nathan Welsh in a lonely third.

C grade was another very small field and with just as much interest in the outcome for jersey points as B grade. Rob Akkermans holding a 6 point lead going into the event from Peter Doody. Jeff Mitchell fronted up just to create a ripple of interest by being a “rose between two thorns” so to speak and Sam Priest chimed in as the lone junior. Doody won the intermediate sprint and took the race honors reducing Akkermans’ lead to 3 points (15 pts for a win and 12 for 2nd place).
