The final twilight race for the season was run on yet another windy but fine night, and saw a good turn out to complete a successful season at the popular Sandown circuit.

Travis Johnston (BikeNOW), the former elite rower, walked away with the A Grade win in only his third start in the premier event – and from his seventh ever race! As usual, the race was an attacking affair, with the strong head wind down the main straight, and the long drag up the back straight the obvious launching places for the protagonists.

Ray Turner (Bianchi), Colnago Cup winner Guy Green, Dylan Boone (Team MG-ZT), Martin Bole, Mark Howard (O’Mara Cycles), Paul Kelly (SBR) and Nathan Wise made repeated attempts to go clear but the bunch was always quick to respond. The best move came from David Sturt (Colnago) and Nick Sheard who opened a ten second advantage in the closing stages before the high speed chase reeled them in with only two lpas remaining.

The final lap saw Boone aggressive, with sprinters Todd Wilksch (Fitzroy Cycles), Warren Knevitt (O’Mara) and Simon Walker (Victorian State Home Loans) swarming to the front, only for Johnston to make his move at the base of the final climb. The powerful newcomer quickly opened a fifty meter advantage which was enough for him to hold off the chase over the final two kilometers.

The sprinters charged to the line chasing second place, and in a very tight finish judges were unable to split Walker and Wilksch, with Ben Jackson (SBR) fourth ahead of Knevitt and Wise.

B Grade saw Chris Tassell (The Freedom Machine) escape early, and ride strongly in the windy conditions, staying clear for over twenty five minutes. He was later joined by Sunday’s winner James Shepherdson and Peter McWeeney before the field regrouped.

The second half of the race saw the field stay intact, with the result coming down to a bunch sprint, Shepherdson proved too strong, taking his second win in succession – which earns him promotion to the A Grade peleton for the rest of the season. Bruce Will claimed second ahead of Ryan Robinson , Tyron Simpson and Team Alex Series leader Simon Lancaster (BikeNOW). Lancaster will join the A Grade bunch also, having climbed the ladder from D Grade in a single season.

Brett Rossiter (Bicycle Superstore) took out the C Grade bunch sprint in his second race bacxk after a long lay off, flashing home ahead of Walter Leoni (Brunetti Coffee), Renato Liucci and Josh Morrison. Nicky Matthews was the Women’s winner, continuing her recent form, and holding off Australian Under 17 track champion Tess Downing (Le Tour Cycles).

The D Grade win saw a maiden win to Chris Menesis, with the minor places to James Rudolph, Ray Smith and Joel Rogers. Anni Jensen took out the Women’s division, ahead of Kasey Smith.

Simon Lancaster’s fifth place and bonus points for promotion to A Grade saw him jump to 170 points, with only five Sunday races remaining in the $7000 Team Alex Criterium Series. Cheryl Walker (138) and Warren Knevitt (137) are neck and neck in the battle for the second Alex Frameset, and still a mathematical chance of catching the young leader, but Lancaster’s grip on the Nexus X-3 frameset is looking pretty secure!

Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue every Sunday from 9am at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2) until the end of April. All holders of 2004 Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts racing clinics in E Grade.
