Orange to Bathurst

Country defeats City in 2004 Orange to Bathurst

Country has defeated City in the 2004 "Daybreak Rotary" Orange to Bathurst Challenge, the boys from the bush scoring 36point to city's 19points, with the locals finishing with 7 riders in the top ten.

Bathurst star sprinter Andrew Carter capped off the best week of his cycling life, winning the prestigious local event after claiming a silver medal in the NSW Track Championship last weekend. Carter defeated Orange rider Mal Haigh and Lidcombe's Matt Plohl, with last years winner Charlie Gascoyne (orange) holding off national junior medalist Anthony Bennett (Lidcombe) for 4th.

With a intermediate sprint at Forest Reefs the front markers lead by former national masters Champ Rosemary Hastings started hard, the sprint at the 20km point going to Jeff Moloney (39min) defeating Bathurst's Jeff Hill (39min) and Sydney cyclist Keith Stockall (39min).

The 39min bunch continued to push the pace through the middle stages with young Jack Goddard impressive leading the group with Noel Smith and Joanna Somerville. The main challenge was coming from the 26min group with Jasmine Lee and Dave Hines of Bathurst, Peter Egan (Orange), Sydney's Alan Whittle, and rookie Orange rider Warren King all looking strong.

All the backmarker groups started very hard, putting plenty of pressure on the high profile 5 man Scratch group (last group away) who lost Grafton to Inverall winner Mick Hoult (Armidale) and NSW Bronze Hillclimb Medallist Dave Green (Lidcombe) in the effort to pull back the leaders, leaving only New Zealander Dave Whyman, Owen McPhillamy (Central Coast) and local Oceania Champion Dean Windsor with almost an impossible task on pulling back the very fast moving Block and 4min 30sec Group who had combined into a super group that was working smoothly in the windy conditions.

At Newbridge Joanna Somerville attacked over the climb to build a good lead and looked some chance of holding on for a classic solo victory. But the super group (combined 8min, 4.30min & 1.30min groups) who had lost pre race favourite Charles Topfer with a puncher was on the surge, and quickly gathering all before it, catching the luckless Somerville to take the lead in the final stages and dominate the final placings. In the last 5 km of the race both Luke Warren and Glenn McGill seized opportunities to break clear of the big group of leaders, however the fast moving group picked him up in sight of the finish line, leaving the field to fight out a bunch sprint, much to pleasure of the speedy Andrew Carter.

Winner of the womens section was local cycle club member Jess Ridder, who was having her last start in Australia before leaving for Italy will the AIS team after winning the National series last year. Ridder was 10th overall in the event and certainly looks in great form for big oversea trip. Greenthorpe cyclist Belinda Diprose continued her good recent form for second. With Hanna Lee defeating Jasmine Lee and Leanne Nicholls for third

Maybe the most pleasing part of the whole event was the success of the "Daybreak Rotary Club" Participation category with many non competitive riders also completing the tough 85km course. Event Organiser Garry Taunton was praised by Cycling Australia's National Development Officer, Rob McDougal, believing the work by Taunton and his local Combined Bicycle User Group could make Bathurst area the Bicycle Capital of the State. 23 of the Participation Category riders bettered the 5 hour elite rider barrier, with Bathurst's Peter Reeves recording a very fast 2hour 40min for the tough 85km course.
