Norwood Cycling Club Weekend Series Race #19

Regency Park, South Australia, March 21, 2004

This was the final Sunday criterium race at Regency Park before the Family Fun Day grand finale at Whitmore Square next Sunday 28 March starting at 9.30am sharp. The perfect weather once again made for some great fast racing.

E grade just had a stroll in the park saving themselves for next week when they have a good chance of picking off some of the $2000 in the Business House Wheelrace or $500 City South Association consolation race. New rider Tom Burford will be one to watch as he had the easy win while second place Shane Kelly is slowly improving and could be a dark horse.

The bunch sprint in D grade went to experienced Coach Kevin McIntosh showing the athletes just how to race and win. Second place went to Thom Edwards who is heading up a grade for his efforts over the past few weeks and new rider Andy Will third who looks to be a very strong rider.

After much debating prior to the start Matt Donnon landed C grade and won … easily. The former A grade cyclist has had a successful return to cycling on the track and now has returned to his winning ways in the criteriums as well. Bryce Alexander has come good at the business end of the season with two seconds in two races with old man Bill Drodge taking a strong third place.

B grade saw two riders on the border line between grades James Kelly and Jeff Wheeler take first and second in a very close sprint. A fit Darren Hansberry, teamed up with Matt Stephens of the Northern Territory and Stephen Cunningham and attempted a breakaway and managed to hold the bunch at bay for some time. It was all a waste and the bunch came together once again for a big bunch sprint. Third place in the bunch went to Marcus Bird.

The main players of A grade in the points series Matt Rex and Chris Luxton just took care of themselves and forgot about the actual race. Meanwhile Olympic Champion Brett Aitken was having a ball and launched an attack followed by TDU rider Adrian Laidler Ben Biggs and Steven Hedley. This strong four man group easily held off any attempt of a chase from the twenty man bunch. Aitkens group went from strength to strength and went over the full length of the finishing straight ahead and out of sight. In the last two laps Aitken attacked his group while Biggs tried in vain to chase him, while Laidler sat on the back of Hedley encouraging him to bridge the gap. With half a lap to go Laidler jumped Hedley and went straight past him and then Biggs to hunt down Aitken, but the strength of Aitken took him to the line first ahead of a smiling Laidler followed by Biggs and Hedley in fourth. Another Herb Valley – Art Ceramics rider Scott Green went off the front of the main pack with one to go in a brave move chased hard by David Miller and the attack looked good with no reaction from the bunch. Into the finishing straight one lone rider was still away, Miller had been caught but Green managed to take his first place in A grade for fifth.

Rex and Luxton did not place and only gained the same number of start points, so they are still one point to difference. The final Whitmore Square criterium will be the hottest one contested all year with first paying 7 points then 5,3,2,1. It is anyones race and would make for some interesting betting.

Then at 1.30pm will be the Lord Mayors Cup 1 hour Criterium Championship. This event will be open to all riders wishing to have a start from A, B, C, D & E.

So bring the family, enjoy the picnic atmosphere and see just who will be the Sponsor Series points winner.
