Silveri by a whisker, Burns by a mile

Daniel Silveri outgunned the field in the final metres of racing to provide an exciting finish to the Illawarra Cycle Club 37 kilometre A-grade road race on Sunday. Silveri just edged out Kieth Benett, second and Craig Paull, third.

Once again threatening rain deterred many club riders from attending, but 23 riders enjoyed a dry race.

The A-grade event was evenly matched with plenty of attacks. At times the bunch was strung out as riders applied pressure to the front of the race. The race stayed together though resulting in a fast paced run back to the line.

The B-grade event was only half a minute slower with promising young rider Mitchell Burns not afraid to show his hand and ride the race from the front. At one stage Burns dragged the bunch along for over three kilometres. In the final climb up Hooker Hill Burns got away with an improving Justin Lathlean to gap the field. At the drop down to the Y-intersection, the pair who had worked well together, put nearly thirty seconds into the chasers. Burns rode away from Lathlean in the final kilometer to take a well earned win.

Seven riders contested the C-grade event. The cautious pace allowed the race to stay together. Jason Johnson used his sprint to take the win from a gutsy Roger Phillips and an improving David Hull. New rider Megan Wilkie took a deserved fourth place.

Next weeks race is a 27 kilometre scratch race with group 8 as marshals. The club presentations ceremony will follow the race.
