Australian junior champion wins C-grade

By Tony Horneman

Randwick Botany junior rider and Australian U15 250m Track Time Trial Champion, Luke Davision, stormed home to with the 28km C-Grade race at Heffron Park on Saturday 13 March 2004. Riding a tactical race, Davison hid at the back of the 20-rider bunch for most of the race. Laura Bortolozzi (Team FRF Couriers) rode strongly chasing down several attempted breakaways. A wall of riders entered the final straight with Davison sixth wheel. In the sprint to the line, Davison stayed in the slipstream, to conserve energy, until the final 50m then surged home to take the win. Andrew Hall finished second with Chris Reynolds, in his first race in C-Grade - third.

'The Machine' Peter McDonald set the pace in the 38km A-Grade race. Matthew Lucas and Chris Jenkins (Team FRF Couriers) made a breakaway in the closing stages, but 12 riders were together again for the final lap. The King of Heffron Park - Anthony Spurgeon (Caravello) scored another win, followed by Matthew Lucas, Jersy Sowa and Peter McDonald.

After winning C-Grade two weeks ago, B-Grade newcomer Josh Marden stunned officials and spectators by winning the 36km B-Grade event. Kevin Black (Sydney CC) was second with Nicholas Rathborne (Eastern Suburbs) third.

Visiting Lidcombe-Auburn rider Bianca Noorman enjoyed her first race in D-Grade at Heffron Park. New Randwick Botany member Heather Hozack had a gutsy ride too. Final placings were Grant Chellew (Sydney), Adam Bradstreet and Steven Foster.

E-Grade was won by Grant Roe followed by Joe Gatt and John Siounis.

Twelve junior riders, including new member James Hampshire, participated in team racing practice. Other riders included Luke Davison, Adriano Maradini, Benjamin Elliott, Sam Buckland, Andrew Weetman, Matthew Weetman, Taylor Weetman, Sam Harrison, Ryan Sharpe, James Teague and George Haher.
