Rampant Refermat

By Barry Timmins

Martin Refermat showed his sprinting skills are back to their prime with a hard fought demonstrative victory in A grade in this weekends Club Scratch event to claim his first victory for 2004. Refermat is on the comeback trial chasing the form of 2003 when he took out an consequential six victories in a row in A grade scratch events with the Southern Vets. With James Russell and Paul Bell absent it was time for others to share in the spoils. John Zoanetti took an significant second to take his first major result of the season. Zoanetti had a most momentous 2003 with eight major results and looks to be back on track for more this year. Third place went to another improver Rob Gaginni who produced an significant six results last year with a notable three victories in the list. William Hyrenko took the spoils in B grade to claim his maiden victory with the club after starting in 2003. This is his second result for the year and it will not be his last given his current form. He led an exuberant Wayne Frost and the high flying Peter Fry to the line. Frost has eleven major results in scratch events since starting in 2003 and a very successful record of fifteen overall. Fry has been working his way back up the grades and improving his form at a rapid rate, he continues to be successful and may give his 2001 record of six results in a year a shake this season.

Chris Spence produced yet another baronial effort in C grade following up his third place in the last club scratch event in February. His best year to date produced three major results and on current form he will easily deliver his best season with the club this year. Gavin McMahon continues his consistent work and improvement riding up from D grade he secured a grand second to take back the lead in the club rankings. Garry Selth took third leading home a fast finishing pair of Chris Mavrangelos and Laurie Pearce.

D grade saw Geoff Hillman claim his first win of the year continuing his very consistent start for his third major result for the season. Hillman has a very tough record to beat having fifteen major results in 2001 and nine in 2002 of which four where victories. He took the honours from Graham Hancox who produced his first result with the club and an improving Martin Hurley. E grade was a significant sprint victory from David Milne who kept out Ian Main and Wolgang Harder. Milne had eight major results last year and will be looking to get more on his current form. Ian Main had to be content with second but rises to the top of the club rankings with his fourth major result of the year and that elusive forst win can not be far away. Wolfgang Harder opens his 2004 account with a third chasing a most impressive 2003 in which he took ten major results.
