Busch bash

By Peter Winton

Mark Busch returned to the winners list today in a scratch demolition of the field. The first 3 placings all went to the Club's scratchies, Busch, Tankard and McNally in that order. Buschy recorded a time of 1:20:49 for the 9 laps of the 5th St Merbein South circuit. Peter "5am" Mulhearn was the only scratch rider to upset the consecutive finishing order by letting Ian Beruldsen and Nathan Floramo get between.

A very fresh south/south westerly provided a head-cross wind up Meridian road and a fast 5th Street and Honor road legs allowed the faster riders to chomp away at the handicaps. Check out the club's website for photo's of some chilled-out riders.

Quite a number of regulars were otherwise occupied today, let's see, Scott Giles missed the start due to a long queue for World Balloon Championship tickets so he was doing his "cue", Harry Robbins did a "Harry Butler", Peter Doody, Errol Schmidt and Steph Frawley all doing the Lyndoch "shuffle" (apologies to Boz Scaggs). Barry Pollock is doing Spain, Richard Hale is doing France, Arthur Anderson is doing Broome, Adrian Lloyd is doing baby-sitting, Peter Winton is doing nothing, Kristen Cerini is doing "Bikes & Trikes" and Sean Gallagher is doing ?????. Who's on first and What's on second!

Today we had 21 persons on the road and 4 juniors. Good to see Tom Athorn get away from the Ambulance station again and have another crack at it. Brendan Liddle also making a valiant effort to regain something of a disastrous season, lets hope the Kennedy bike fit session doesn't put him too far in front of his contemporaries.

Limit at 14 minutes comprised Cam Crothers, Andrew Twaddle, Ian Japp, Greg Scott, Tom Athorn and Dave Digby. Somewhere on lap 2 this group fractured in half. At 8 minutes stood Jeff Mitchell, Kev Gregory, Dave Priest and Brendan Liddle. The 5 minute bunch make up was Dion Bassi-Anstee, Jack Lokan and Rob Akkermans and was probably a little severely outnumbered, and then to have Jack Lokan retire 4 laps out didn't do their opportunities any favours. Enjoy Queensland Jack.

On chopping block of 3 minutes was Ian Beruldsen, Nathan Floramo, Michael Shipsides and our very own Mr Crumpet, Peter Mills ! Scratch I've already covered.

Standing around our marquee and shivering isn't really the best option recovering from lower back complaints but still it's difficult to concentrate on which bunch is where when limit have a lap on scratch. So, there was a stuff-up in the lap count and only 9 laps were raced instead of the 10 (or was it 12?) as per the program. Never mind, scratch would have destroyed the field by a greater margin had that been the case. Let's not forget, the race panel and assistant handicappers set the h/caps on the basis of the program.

Scratch blew the rolled up bunches away on the Meridian Road rises (Toz knows where I mean !) and from the timers/judges perspective all we saw were 3 riders rounding the corner followed by daylight!

Mark Busch scooted away from Kev T and Rob Mc in the closing 100 metres for another win and further demonstration of his ability to "burst" at the end. Ian Beruldsen proved yet again that he has the goods to stay with scratch once caught. I can only hope this most obvious of obvious occurrences is seen by the right persons. Nathan Floramo as well, under notice.

In the juniors, little Ryan Digby recorded a 1:09:18 for his 5 laps (30.15kms) and won't be long long before Dad will have to get a wriggle on!! Like McManus 2nd and Aaron Moe 3rd. Well done boys.

Next week is Red Cliffs cemetery, a 72 km race. I hope the wind is kind out there on the bloody Werrimull road, otherwise it'll be a "killer", and yes there'll be some bludgin' goin' on, you watch.
