Pop Stewart Memorial Handicap

Lancefield, June 6 2004

By Luke McDonough, www.coburgcycling.com

Coburg was back in the results in the Pop Stewart memorial on the week end. Paul Simpson in his first race for the club took out third place, Mussie Akgun 4th and Garry Clively rounded things off with fastest time honours.

The seventy riders faced little wind and sunny conditions which gave the strong limit bunch of 20 riders a good chance of staying away. The 24 minute bunch set off in pursuit of the sole limit rider off 30 minutes and once catching him they continued to work hard.

After 40km the limit bunch was reduced to 12 riders Mario Tonelli was struggling to stay with the bunch 30 seconds behind.

The 19 minute bunch containing Narelle Peterson and John Lehner came through the time check at 40km at 6 minutes 38 down on the leaders.

The 14 minute bunch of Andrew Gannon, Adrian Hanson and John Marcan where 10 minutes 10 seconds down.

The 14 man scratch bunch came through with a huge 19:24 deficit on the outmarkers having only made up 5 minutes on the opening lap.

Lap two saw a break of eventual winners Ben Ladner, Sam Lindsay and Coburgs new recruit Paul Simpson 4:56 up on the John Lehner led bunch, with Mussie Agkun and Narrell Peterson's bunch at 6:00 with scratch coming through at 15:00 later it appeared the outmarkers had the race under their control, although Simpson was questioning whether 3 riders could hold off the rest.

With 20km to go the leading trio still had 4:45 on the Akgun and Peterson group and they continued to work through smoothly on the flat roads back into Lancefield.

Ladner made a strong surge on the last climb to win from Sam Lindsay and Paul Simpson. Sprinter Mussie Akgun lead home the chasing bunch 2:38 down with Garry Clivey winning fastest time.
