Handicap Race, July 31, 2004

Habeck and Augustson Too Strong

Anna Habeck concluded an excellent week of racing, having finished 11th in the Elite Women's NSW Time Trial Championship during the week, by outsprinted Kerry Augustson in the final metres of Saturdays 45 km Handicap Race to take a well deserved victory. The pair broke away from the well organised combined nine and ten minute groups in the last and could not be caught.

Almost perfect conditions greeted the riders at the starting line, with Les Hewitt leading the field away from a mark of twenty two minutes followed by Stephen Phillips four minutes later.

With twelve late entries on the line swelling the field, and giving the handicapper a headache, the front runners had a tough job trying to stay away.

The ten minute bunch made a determined drive to catch the nine minute bunch to ensure they wouldn't be caught from behind. Roger Phillips sacrificed his race so that the ten minute bunch of Dave Morris, Dean Kelly, Augustson and Habeck could combine with the nine minute bunch of Paul Kaye, David Hull, Phil Latz and Peter Vesel at the end of the second lap. This group proceeded to sweep up the front markers with only Colin Shaw able to slot in. Unfortunately for Shaw a puncture ended his race prematurely.

Strong riding from all the middle groups in the good weather conditions made it hard for any of the bunches to catch the ones in front. This swung the advantage to the front bunch and scratch markers.

The seventeen minute group was swapping off well with Frank Soto and Austin Pitman making sure the bunch powered along. This was making the chasing block bunch work very hard with strong riding by Gavin Drury, Andrew Stewart and Mark Davis powering up the hills.

The large scratch bunch starting three minutes behind block were powering along in a determined attempt to sweep the field. Josh Wall, fresh from victory in last weeks NSW Under 19 Time Trial Championships win, and Joe McDonnel were the driving forces with the rest of the scratch markers taking turns being careful not to get dropped. It seemed as though the scratch bunch would indeed catch the whole field.

Fearing they would be caught by scratch, the ten minute bunch picked up the pace slightly each lap until midway through the last lap where they knew they could not be caught. Augustson lined up on Habeck's wheel on Hooker hill and the pair accelerated into the far turn. Riding back up the hill the pair had ten seconds on the rest of the bunch and despite David Hull's best efforts they could not be reeled in. Habeck took the sprint with Augustson crossing the line on her wheel.

Paul Kaye outsprinted David Hull for third, with Dave Morris fifth, Dean Kelly sixth Phil Latz seventh all crossing the line nineteen seconds behind the winner.

The scratch bunch were the next home, having caught all riders except those from the combined front group, with fastest time going to Joe McDonnel from Peter Jones, Tim Morris and Josh Wall all at the same time of 72:06.
