Racing booming in Sunraysia

By Peter Winton (as Max Merritt and the Meteors sang "slip, slip, slipping away")

It's official, competitive cycling is alive and well in Sunraysia as evidenced by the 25 riders fronting up today. This is not the first time we've had good numbers this summer but it is becoming a regular occurrence and is encouraging for this coming winter series. Even the training rides are proving popular with quite a number now doing the early bird ride at 6am on Saturday's and raking up 120kms.

Today's turn-out resulted in 6 riders for the A grade, 13 in the B grade and 6 in the C grade. Much astonishment was voiced regarding the presence of Peter Doody in the C grade contingent along with Adrian Lloyd. Both these blokes are destined for B grade and should be afforded considerable respect when that promotion occurs. At the rate Doody is pounding the kilometres into his legs he will need a friend in the tyre industry to help pay the costs and Lloyd is continually putting together some slick time-trial times.

C Grade

In C grade today the 6 were, Doody, Lloyd, Robyn Doyle, Jeff Mitchell, Rob Akkermans and Greg Scott. This group went last and were required to complete 9 laps or 47.8kms. Jeff Mitchell was in trouble early as the Doody/Lloyd show ran underdone riders off their legs. In the end however, it was the race savvy Akkermans who proved the better and outsprinted his rivals to take the win.

B grade

In the "killer bees" 13 masochists whipped themselves into a frenzy and when they weren't whipping each other into a frenzy they whip themselves into a lather ! Why, is the eternal question. I have a theory that's in the Lycra. Some secret fibre impregnated with a substance that demands you do this foolish thing. Either that or the overdose of banana and ricecream has a strange effect on those over the age of 40.

Ian Beruldsen and Brendan Liddle along with Dion Bassi-Anstee created the most challenges today whilst the sleek lines of Steve Fenwick and Richard Hale were never far from the action. It goes without saying that odd shapes catch the most wind and therefore are doomed to struggle, well where can I find the gene master who dished me out a crappy deal?

Liddle and Bassi-Anstee broke away at a crucial time at the 45km mark and looked the goods. A puncture put paid to Bassi-Anstee's hopes and Liddle was re-captured by the throng. A further assault by Liddle, this time with Fenwick, in the second half of the final lap saw these two stay away. Fenwick too good in the finale.

A Grade

In the A grade affair the 6 of them were compelled to a race within themselves and all would be decided in the bunch sprint finish.

This coming Tuesday is a 24km Time-Trail at the "Riverside" circuit, 6pm sharp.

Next weekend the Club will participate in the community event "Tour de Murray" with a ride out to Lindemans Winery and back, a 75 km journey.

Feedback is always welcome, especially from Doody's Irish friends. We need some dirt on this guy! www.peter.winton@dipnr.nsw.gov.au
