Menzies' training blitz pays off

By Matthew Conn

Launceston’s Karl Menzies showed the benefits of a recent training blitz to take victory in the Dorset Classic cycle race at Bridport on Saturday.

In the final sprint Menzies just held off Caleb Manion, who was looking for a win in his last Tasmanian race before heading to the US to ride with Division III team, Jelly Belly. Manion’s TIS team mate, Ryan Sullivan claimed third place to go with the second place finish he had in the race two years ago.

The Dorset Classic attracted a top local field and featured several early attacks and small breakaway groups formed on several occasions.

The top three finishers had been part of a five-man breakaway that established itself just past Lebrinna on the toughest climb of the race. The two other members of the original breakaway, Wes Sulzberger and Jason Andersch, finished just behind the leading trio, and by the end of the 88km race, only a few seconds separated the two lead groups and the main chasing bunch.

The win for Menzies continues his run of good from following successful trips to the Bay Criterium Series and the Tour of Wellington where he rode for the newly formed Australian semi-professional squad, Team MGZT.

In the junior events, pre race favourite Ben Grenda made the most of the mass start format to win the under 15 race with David Stride winning in the under 13 category.

The regular scratchmen were too strong for the field in the under 17 race with Tom Robinson winning ahead of Clay Murfet and Alex Lyons.
