Giles takes command

John Giles took control of the club rankings with a fast and powerful sprint to the line to claim victory in the Blackwell Funerals Handicap event in near perfect conditions on Sunday. The race was a two division handicap run over a local challenging course taking in a number of short but arduous climbs from Bakers Gully and Kangarilla.

Giles has had a very successful year and now has no equal in the club rankings leading the field with ten major results that include three victories. In the bunched finishes he is showing talent for maintaining a fast and aggressive tempo that few others in the club can currently match.

Second place went to Paul Bell with his seventh major result for the season. Bell is looking very much like he will improve on his 2003 tally of eight major results with more than half the season left to race. Alistair Smith claimed only his second result of the year and his first ever trophy by taking third. Smith made a very special effort at the finish considering he had to mix it with scratch having started with the outmarkers in the division on a nine minute handicap.

Division two was a run away victory to Di Goddard for her fourth victory this year having claimed the club championship in the road race and time trial in her age division and another previous handicap race victory in April. This is Goddard’s most successful season with the club since 2000 with her previous best number of victories being 2 in 2003.

Kate Logan led home the 7 minute group in the sprint for the line for the other places from a determined Joe Skibinski and tenacious Mary Callahan. Logan is having a very successful time this season having taken the state title in the road race and both the club time trial and road race championships in her age division. Her tally of results with the club now stands at six for the season her best ever with the Vets.

Skibinski recorded his first result for the year in taking third and looked strong on the road showing he has potential to do more damage in the coming weeks.

Callahan has continued a most successful year claiming her fifth result for the season in taking a well earned fourth. Her best tally to date with the club was an impressive seven major results recorded last year.
