Catch us if you can

By Barry Timmins

Southern Veteran club members took part in a 49 km club handicap event on the weekend in a race dominated by a sterling effort by the out-markers. It was a girls day out after an unfortunate disqualification for senior club veteran Noel Myatt who crossed the double white lines in his bid for the finishing line and suffered the wrath of the officials who have been consistent on this ruling since the move to the new headquarters at McLaren Flat. The small but courageous group of Di Goddard, Marie Bate and Noel Myatt kept a fast finishing and large peloton at bay with Goddard and Bate taking the major places after Myatt's disqualification. It is Goddard's second victory with the club this year following up her gold medal in the club time trial championships. Bate has now claimed two second places this year with today's result complimenting her silver medal in the club time trials.

Following the trio was a very large group which fragmented a little on the last drag up McMurtrie road. In the sprint for the line Martin Refermat proved to be the strongest and was almost rewarded with fastest time after James Russell and John Watters suffered the same fate as Myatt in their run for the line but chopping block starter Paul Bell just edged him out by six seconds on corrected time. Refermat has shown his ability earlier this year in a fine sprint for the line and victory in A Grade Scratch event in March. He was followed by Garry Selth and Greg Berryman who are continuing their very consistent seasons. Selth has featured three times in the major placings this year and Berryman four and his place today takes him up with the leaders in the club rankings.
