Frawley flys flag for females

Where do I begin? How about at the point where 38 riders appeared at today's start line. And that's still not counting the 4 or 5 regulars who were absent! Mildura cycling is truly alive. In addition to this number there were 4 juniors going around under the tuition of an experienced rider.

Well, apart from the problem of off-road car parking space and bike rack hanging space the day belonged to Stephanie Frawley. Stephanie hasn't been part of the racing scene for more than 6 years and today she won with plenty to spare after riding off her bunch with Adam Wightwick the pair maintained their rhythm and kept the chasing packs off their tails until Frawley gave Wightwick the flick on the headwind Meridian road section, bye bye boy-o.

Limit bunch at 20 minutes, had Robyn Doyle, Kris Cerini, Dave Digby and Brian Dodson. The latter two going around for their first time. At 15 minutes was newcomer Andrew Twaddle, Peter Winton, Harry Robbins (both in recovery), Jeff Mitchell, Bob Pedlar, Stephanie Frawley, Adam Wightwick and John Caldwell. Caldwell was in trouble by the start of lap 2. Winton experienced a rear tyre puncture with blow-out which put paid to him for the day. Twaddle struggled with the speed of this group and soon fell away but finished the race out.

The 12:30 bunch comprised Dave Priest, Ralph Morrish, Kevin Gregory, Greg Scott and last weeks winner Nathan Floramo. Chasing this group at 10 minutes was Michael Shipsides, Jack Lokan, Sean Gallagher, Harvey Dwyer, Peter Doody and Rob Akkermans. Akkermans stepped off the bike at the end of lap 3 with a mystery problem. Rider Doody had a wry smile as though it was some "payback" from the summer comp. Do the Irish cast spells I wonder?

Ok then, now were getting into the serious end of the pecking order with chopping block, off 5 minutes, containing Scott Giles (should he be known as the "pumper" or the "killer"?), Dion Bassi-Anstee, Ian Beruldsen, Nathan "BMW" Welsh, Peter Mills, Richard Hale and Arthur Anderson of the medical fraternity.

The scratch-men today had the power of Damon Stefani, recent B grade winner from Norwood (SA), Kevin Tankard, Mark "george dubya" Busch, Rob McNally, Pete Mulhearn, Nathan Sumerhayes and Errol Schmidt. . Summerhayes punctured on lap 2 and he too went the way of Winton, to the sidelines. Mulhearn struggled with heavy legs as he recovers from the Forster Ironman (or is that really a heavy tummy from ingesting post race fluids Pete?)

I'll just take a few breaths as I regain my strength from typing finger paralysis, so many names! I couldn't believe that the middle groups never combined early to mince up the limit groups. Yes, I know, the wind was blowing and all I was doing was getting the lap counts wrong, but c'mon, all that masculinity and testosterone out there wasn't working too well is all I can say. Need some more training fluids in your system, stop buying those cheap reds and light beer.

In the Junior Boys event Ryan Digby took out the 24km race from Aidan Dodson and Luke McManus. The lone junior girl today was Tomara Dodson who completed 12kms (2 laps) with the boys before she decided enough was enough. Well done to all and make sure you return next week to take advantage of your efforts today.

Next week's cycling rush can be acquired at the old Red Cliffs cemetery circuit, follow Werrimull road to Lowan Avenue and keep going, then turn left when you run out of road. And if the wind is blowing like it was today there will be riders calling for their mummies before it's over! A 72km (ouch) graded handicap awaits you all (and me if I can keep the air in my tyres) for a 1:30pm start. Please make sure you are there early enough to sign-on and get a race number. Those intending to pay up their season subs have until May 8 to do so.

Anyone wishing to ride out from Mildura should be at the Centre Plaza by 12 noon.
