Illawarra Cycle Club Scratch Race

April 24, 2004

Wind takes toll

Peter Jones had to use everything to win the Illawarra Cycle Club 45 kilometre scratch race last Saturday. Jones was followed across the line by Guy Mathiske and Graham Rutter.

The gusty winds which rose Saturday afternoon tested the depth of the riders' fitness in all grades. At some stages riders had little protection from the crosswinds.

The A-grade field of ten was reduced quickly on the first lap. By the second lap only half were still in the race. The trio of Jones, Mathiske and Rutter came back up the steep side of Marshal Mount together and pushed hard back to the finish. Craig Paull chased all the way to take fourth.

B-grade started with fifteen riders but once again the wind took its toll splitting the bunch several times. In the end it was the stronger riders, Hans Batteard, Gary Mandy, Austin Pitman, Dean Marcinkowski, Dave Russell, Andrew Stewart and Peter Evans who kept the pressure on. In the finish it was Gary Mandy who took the sprint from Batteard and Stewart.

The C-grade event had the largest field with 16 starters. Again depth of fitness was a weakness exploited by the windy conditions. Six riders made it over the hill together on the last lap of whom only 3 contested the sprint. In the end Mitch Harris outgunned Roger Phillips and Teegan Makowski for second and third respectively.

Steve Phillips rode the D-grade event solo to take a well deserved win. Steve is steadily improving and his race was difficult under the conditions.

Next weeks race is a 44.5 kilometre handicap with marshal group 2.
