Rourke routs competition

The conditions may not have been conducive for recording a good time trial time but that did not stop Adam Rourke from recording the fastest time on the day and setting a new masters record for the 27.5km distance of 40:14.59. The time eclipsed the one set several years ago by the time trial expert Hans Batteard.

When most riders found the strong winds very demanding Rourke put his head down and was 10 seconds ahead of current U17 State and Australian Champion Josh Wall, at the end of the 18km lap. Luke Dale was only a further 5 seconds behind. Those three were almost 4 minutes ahead of the other 26 competitors.

Rourke maintained his rhythm and stretched his lead over Wall to 13 seconds at the end of the 27.5km. Wall’s time was 40:27.26. Dale came in with a time of 40:39:68. The other rider expected to feature on the day was Peter Jones, unfortunately he snapped his chain as he powered off from the start.

The stand out ride on the day was probably the one by the masters 6 rider Rob Calladine. Although one of the oldest starters his time of 44:35.55 was the fifth fastest on the day.

The respective winners of their categories were:

U17 women - Jaclyn Kejda

U19 women - Anna Habeck

U19 men - Josh Wall

U23 men - Luke Dale

Men - Jonathan Stagg

Women - Emma Ringer

Masters 2 - Jeff Gray

Masters 3 - Adam Rourke

Masters 4 - Frank Tortorici

Masters 6 - Rob Calladine

Masters 7 - Lionel Covington

Next week’s race is a 44km scratch race, group 3 to marshal. The Barbara Wyles handicap the following weekend has been brought forward to a 1pm start. Riders wishing to ride the handicap should contact Lionel Covington. The Patricia Gooley handicap for juniors has been moved to the track season.
