Tasmanian Road Cycling Series - Devon 80

June 14, 2003

By Matthew Conn

Burnie's Matthew Atkins showed his comeback from chronic fatigue syndrome is almost complete by taking out the Devon 80 road race on Saturday.

Riding from the second scratch mark, Atkins and co-markers Pete Smith, Matt Conn and John Lewarn made the most of their four minute head start over the scratch bunch. The four rode strongly together to catch the two groups ahead of them by the start of the fourth of five laps around the Moriarty circuit.

The scratch bunch made it to within one minute of the leading four but was unable to make any inroads over the final lap of the testing circuit.

In the sprint to the line, Atkins overhauled Conn in the final metres of the race with Smith taking third.

Atkins won the Devon 80 race back in 1990 and in the 13 years since then has represented Tasmania on both road and track as well as racing in the US and Belgium. It was following his trip to America that Atkins was diagnosed with chronic fatigue and his return to racing has been a long and slow process of recovery, taking most of the previous four years.

Matthew Goss continued to show his strong condition by taking fastest time honours from fellow scratch marker, Gareth Atkins.
