Bayles, Saturday June 14, 2003

By Mal Sawford

Another cold and windy day kept the fields small for the first race over the Modella hills this season, but the forecast heavy rains and hail storms held off, allowing riders to battle each other rather than the elements.

Only four of the A Grade field were in contention after the first pass through the hills; Craig Johnson, Andrew Rohan (Pro-Motion Bicycles) and Anthony Smith (Gran Prix Cycles) had cleared away from the chasers, leaving only Nathan Wise with an outside chance of rejoining the lead group. The strong head wind early in the second lap saw the leaders extend their advantage however, and the trio stayed intact to fight out the finish, where Johnson proved too strong, taking the win ahead of Club mate Rohan and Smith, with Wise a distant fourth.

Chris Tassell (Pro-Motion Bicycles), who had turned 17 the day before celebrated his first ride in B Grade with win. The youngster had earned his promotion after outclassing the C Grade field in recent weeks, and showed his good climbing form by escaping the survivors on the second lap with Andrew Smith, before riding away on the final climb to cross the line with a 1 minute 20 second advantage over Smith. Jenny Macpherson (Fitzroy Cycles) put in a strong ride to claim third 4 minutes 40 seconds behind the winner, while Nathaniel Brown was over 9 minutes in arrears.

Trevor Cameron and Simon Vandestadt fought out the finish of the C Grade race, with Cameron having the quicker legs after a long afternoon battling the winds. John Tassell (Pro-Motion Bicycles) crossed the line alone in third place, a few minutes ahead of the remains of the bunch, lead home by leading Woman Rachel Rademaker (Cycle Link).

D Grade field raced over 1 lap of the course, and stayed together until midway up the opening climb. Brent Bignell, Andrew Prestage and Jason Gay had a small lead at the summit, which they increased through the rolling hills, before Gay lost contact on the descent. Prestage, in his first race rode strongly, but was out thought in the approach to the line, leading out his opponent for the final 2 kilometres, allowing Bignell in his comeback after a five year layoff to take the sprint. Veteran George Symmons chased down Gay in the closing stages, and was rewarded with third place for his efforts.

Next weekend, Carnegie Caulfield hosts the Sonny Barnes Memorial Handicap over 90 kilometres at Bayles, with entries from 1.00pm for a 1.30pm start. Full details are available at www.carnegiecycling.com.au.
