Regency Park Criteriums, South Australia, December 14, 2003

The first Sunday morning criterium at Regency Park with perfect conditions for bike racing. Looking at the numbers though it was no different than any Saturday afternoon we have raced in the fine warm weather. It is fine time the riders pulled their fingers out and supported the racing that is supplied and show respect to the volunteers giving their time, before it is too late.

Nine riders fronted the starter in E grade with new riders Michael Karp and the long awaited entry of Troy Collett. With a little more racing experience these riders will be able to find their feet and adjust to the pace. The bunch raced smoothly in a pack until the last ten minutes when Peter Teickert and Scott Fergison turned up the heat. Their time out in front was only short lived with the bunch coming together with two to go. Teichert had a hard sprint to the line against Peter Sabine riding in front of the bunch and that is the way they finished with Gemma Kernick taking third.

D grade was a little smaller with a group of seasoned riders enjoying their day. No fierce attacks or breakaways as these riders were content to ride as a group. It has been three years in the making but Simon Spurling stole the show by sneaking away and winning the sprint in an overwhelming show of emotion. I think we are now sure to see more of this rider in the placings. Second went to Alan Braggs who just entered D grade from mountain biker Sam Warden.

The pace was again hot in C grade with both Rochelle Gilmore and Amy Safe punishing the men with their turns of pace on the front. There were many attempts by these riders to go off the front but the majority of the bunch wanted to work today not to let anyone get away. Mark Davies was another strong man with attacking and was able to get a small break with Safe and David Miller. Again the bunch reacted and bought them back. After they were caught no-one wanted to lead and Daniel Smith tried again for a solo effort with just a few minutes left before two laps to go and opened a break with the bunch still in confusion. Smith has tried this a number of times and persistence pays off, coming into the finishing straight he still had 100 metres on the bunch and was able to take an easy win over the quality field.

The pace was also very high in B grade and they had no intention of anyone getting away for an easy win. Attacks kept coming from the word go with James Kelly and Stephen Sabine putting in some big efforts, but in the end it all came down to the bunch sprint. Adrian Stevens has certainly returned to form in B grade with another fine sprint win over the improving Julian Blackwell and Bradley Smith.

A grade was won by Brett Aitken.
