The Blue Mosque calls CSF again

Following the first win of his career at the Hell of Mergelland in Holland one week ago, CSF's Mauro Finetto confirmed that he's in excellent condition this Spring. He easily won the uphill sprint of the leading group that concluded stage 1 of the Presidential Tour of Turkey in front of the Blue Mosque of Istanbul.
Initially, Finetto wasn't very keen to come to Turkey, his directeur sportif Roberto Reverberi revealed after the stage but the 24-year-old from Tregnago near Verona realised how much more suitable the course of the Turkish tour was for him, rather than the hilly one of the Tour of Trentino. "I'm aware that CSF was quite successful last year for their first participation at the Tour of Turkey," Finetto said of his team-mates who collected no fewer than four stage wins out of eight one year ago. "We've started well again," he smiled.
"I'm feeling good since the Three Days of De Panne," he continued. "In Belgium we have interestingly become used to riding on the cobblestones, which has been helpful here on the circuit of Istanbul. I felt at my ease from the start. In the finale I managed to take the command, but 90% of the merit for this victory goes to my team. I only had to work for the last 200 metres."
Finetto reckoned stage 1 was very tactical. He won a sprint but there were constantly attacks following attacks. "It's been us going on the offensive during the whole second lap, including the uphill and downhill near the finishing line," the stage winner said. "Our directeur sportif [Roberto] Reverberi told us this was the solution for splitting up the bunch. We were five riders from CSF up there in the front group of about 50 guys."
It helped them control the situation, even when race favourite Kevin Seeldrayers (Quick Step) attacked with 34 kilometres to go. Marco Frapporti joined him and tried to finish alone until he got caught with 2km to go. The suspense remained intense until the end. CSF ended up with a 1-2 as Mauro Richeze was the fastest behind Finetto.
"It's my first time wearing a yellow jersey and I'm very young," noted Finetto who was 6th at the Tour of Lombardy last year as a neo-pro. "I don't have the experience to defend, we'll see stage by stage how it goes." Reverberi underlined that CSF's non-selection for the Giro d'Italia this year appears to be an incentive for his riders to perform at the Tour of Turkey.

Soon after the flag was dropped by the president of the Republic of Turkey, Abdullah Gül in front of Hagia Sofia in Istanbul, the first attacker of the 45th Presidential Tour of Turkey was Rafael Serrano (Contentpolis-Ampo). He enjoyed riding alone ahead of the bunch for the two first of the 14 laps scheduled in stage 1. He eventually got caught by the bunch led by Tiziano Dall'Antonia (CSF). Soon after the regrouping, the peloton split up in two.
About 45 riders formed the front group with Robert Hunter (Barloword) looking strong. At half way, the gap between the two groups had increased to 1:30. It went so fast that a few riders got dropped, one of them being local cyclist Bunyamin Ozdemir (Turkey) as the race reached its half way point. Kevin Seeldrayers (Quick Step), Paolo Longo Borghini (Barloworld) and defending champion David Garcia Dapena (Xacobeo-Galicia) were noticed among the most active in the lead.
With 63 kilometres to go, Marco Frapporti (CSF) found the opportunity to break clear. He got caught 7 km further. With 50 km to go, the second part of the peloton had given up as the gap moved over 6 minutes. 49 riders were counted in the front. Eight of them broke clear with 45km to go: Gustavo Cesar Veloso (Xacobeo-Galicia), Simone Ponzi (Lampre), Seeldrayers and Velo (Quick Step), Darryl Impey (Barloworld), Mauro Finetto (CSF), Alessandro Donati (Acqua e Sapone) and Tomislav Danculovic (Loborika).
Usually used in the role of lead-out man, Velo insisted by himself and paved the way for a counter-attack by Seeldrayers who was joined at the head of the race by Frapporti with 34 km to go. The duo reached an advantage of 1:01 as they crossed the line with 3 laps (30km) to go. Soon a chasing group was formed by Emanuele Bindi (Lampre), Tomislav Danculovic (Loborika), Paolo Longo Borghini (Barloworld), Diego Milan (Acqua e Sapone), Davide Malacarne (Quick Step) and Alan Marangoni (CSF).
Frapporti attacked Seeldrayers and went solo with 11km to go. He got caught with 2km to go, as Hunter and Theo Bos (Rabobank) were the first two riders to jump on his wheel. Frapporti paved the way for the final rush of his team-mates Finetto and Mauro Richeze (CSF) who preceded in this order Ruggero Marzoli (Acqua e Sapone).
