A group of riders – quickly dubbed the "Dirty Dozen" – put the Tour of Tasmania leader board into an absolute frenzy by the end of the second stage Tuesday. The tour's fourth stage – from Burnie to Sulphur Creek – saw the fourth new leader when Englishman Kristian House replaced West Australian Ben King on top of the general classification and he will wear the prized yellow jersey into battle on day three.

In a tight throw to the finish line, Savings & Loans' Joel Pearson beat home teenager SASI's Jack Bobridge by a hair's breath. It was Pearson's first ever victory in a Scody Cup series race and eclipses seven previous minor placings. House turned a third stage deficit of 1:27 minutes to King into a lead of nine seconds over talented Victorian, William Ford, while King was pushed back to third and 48 seconds behind.

The Tour of Tasmania is the fourth and final leg of the Scody Cup national cycling series and with 107 original entries is one of the largest events of its kind ever held in Australia. This year's Scody Cup series has included the Tour of Gippsland, Australian Grand Prix (Ballarat) and Tour of the Murray River, before riders and the official entourage crossed Bass Strait to contest the final six days of action on the Apple Isle.

How it unfolded

Following such an arduous morning criterium, not many riders were relishing the prospect of the 71.4-kilometre afternoon road race from Burnie to Sulphur Creek. For those that competed in the same stage 12 months before, the memory of powerful rain and buffeting winds was still fresh in the memory and more than helped to dampen the enthusiasm.

But Tasmania's Northwest Coast fickle weather was on good behaviour although there were still erratic patterns throughout the afternoon. None of the riders who featured prominently in the morning stage gave a yelp on the road, but that was to be expected. Twenty kilometres into the stage, a breakaway group of 12 riders slipped innocuously off the front and the peloton didn't see them for the rest of the day.

The dozen escapees included the eventual top 10 stage finishers, Joel Pearson (Savings & Loans), Jack Bobridge (SASI), William Clarke (Praties), David Kemp (Virgin Blue), Kristian House (Budget Forklifts), Jonathon Lovelock (VIS/Jayco), Matt Benson (SASI), William Ford (SA/AIS), Daniel Furmston (Praties) and Lachlan Stewart (Cycle City Ballarat), as well as Rohan Dennis (SASI) and Peter Milostic (Budget Forklifts).

The group worked well together, although at times some of the team tactics employed did appear a little foreign to what many race experts were expecting and/or anticipating. House and Ford were the best placed riders on GC that were in the "Dirty Dozen" – House starting the stage 1:27 minutes adrift of leader Ben King and Ford a further eight seconds back.

All other riders in the breakaway bunch were no real threat to the GC leaders, although they did eventually peg back more than two minutes and with six stages still to race anything can – and most likely will – happen.
